Microsoft Update 0x80072efd

    Well, after I got this error I found KB entry 836941 and started happily to work my way through the solution suggested. Unfortunately I hit a problem in step 4 ( "Add the update websites to your list of trustworthy sites" or something similar - I am translating from a German text ...)

    When trying to add
    update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx
    I get a message telling me this address is already part of another zone and can't be added. Doesn't say which zone, would make it probably too easy for the user, and the address above is not part of one of the other zones shown in Internetoptions ...

    Does anybody know where to remove the address above in order to be able to add it in the correct zone?

    I expect you have http://update.microsoft.com in your "Trusted Sites" list (which already includes http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx).

    Here is a relevant Microsoft Knowledge Base article referring specifically to the error code you posted in your thread title.


    The Microsoft sites I have loaded in my Internet Explorer 7 "Trusted Sites" are as follows:

    Perhaps using these as Trusted Sites will work for you. This might be overkill though so you may want to start with the article I linked above.

    As stated I was using the solution described in KB entry 836941 when I encountered the error. The very article you are referring to. This solution specifically requests

    http:// update.microsoft.com / microsoftupdate / v6 / default.aspx

    to be in the trusted zone and this is the entry I am unable to add. However, I will take your list and give it a try. Unfortunately it's not my machine which has the problem, hence I will have to wait until tomorrow for this test ...

    Its an error. For trusted zones, http://update.microsoft.com is the same as http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx

    I learned a lot the hard way today. First of all IE6.0 reports an already existing entry in "Trusted Sites" as "is already part of another zone ", which I found out by deliberately adding an existing entry ... IE7.0 however reports correctly "entry already exists ". This effectively meant I lost my last chance to solve the problem with KB836941. After checking, applying and correcting all things mentioned in this KB article I still was left with 0x80072efd ...

    With no further leads to go on with I then reverted back to experiences from my professional life in networking a long time ago. And the most common cause of communication problems then were incompatible MTU sizes. Hence I started to ping the local network with defined MTU sizes and was happy to find a working MTU size of 1472 bytes. But as soon as I tried the same thing via our router into WAN I found a working MTU size of only 972 bytes! Now this could be a reason. Could it be the machine with the update problem is telling the Microsoft Update site about the large MTU size, but the router in between does not like this MTU size and does not allow the communication???

    Current state of affairs is - I am currently looking for a way to change either the MTU size in our router or in Windows XP with not a lot of success so far! Any help there will be appreciated!

    Changed the MTU size to no avail. Checked everything I found on the net and nothing helped. I am honestly and truly at wits end.

    Only one tiny lead left - if I'd be able to uninstall Internet Explorer completely, there might be a chance all values now specified for IE will also vanish and a reinstall will be a "clean" install with new values and options. Unfortunately while upgrading from IE 6.0 to IE 7.0 two days ago I noticed there is no uninstall for Internet Explorer ...

    Does anybody know?

    Have you looked in Add/Remove Programs for Windows Internet Explorer 7 - using the uninstall feature rolls you back to IE 6.

    Thanks Pete C, but ...
    ... the error appeared in IE 6 (then I upgraded to IE 7 which didn't do anything to the error), hence a rollback to IE 6 would not help. The idea is to produce somehow a clean install with factory settings. If this is not possible then my idea is to check the failing IE 7 installation and registry with the values of a working one ...

    OK, but you have only been trying step 4 from MSKB 836941...

    So what about a firewall? Which one are you using? What happens when you switch it off & them try MS Update?

    Are you using a proxy server?

    Also, post the last 1/3rd of your WindowsUpdate.log here.

    To open this log, go to Start > Run and type

    %windir%/WindowsUpdate.log

    and press OK.


    Can you download this file: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v4/iuident.cab

    Are you using any Security Suites (Norton Internet Security / Zone Alarm / McAfee)?

    Sorry Arie,
    if I was misleading you. Of course I went through all the steps listed in KB836941! Nothing of those helped, hence I started looking for other things.

    Step 1: Everything appears to work except Windows Update
    Step 2: Just Windows XP firewall active and even this I switched off to no avail
    Step 3: Nothing of this kind in place
    Step 4: ... started the whole discussion and is now in place
    Step 5: Just 127.0.0.1 localhost active
    Step 6: No proxyserver around here, Internetoptions set accordingly

    Yes, file http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v4/iuident.cab can be downloaded
    McAfee Antivirus is in place, but a rather old version if I remember correctly. However, latest virus definition file is applied.

    Is there a way to append a part of Windowsupdate.log to a post as file? This log appears to be rather large ...

    The Windowsupdate.log probably contains logs from the last few months or so. I expect you can paste the portion of the Windowsupdate.log for a recent run or two into a post or two. Scroll toward the end of the log and look for

    It seems that the 0x80072f8f error code can also occure because of a time issue.

    Check you have the correct time and date and time zone:
    1. Double click the clock in the bottom right hand corner of your Taskbar.
    2. Check you have the correct time and date.
    3. Click the Time Zone Tab.
    4. Check you have the correct time zone.

    Also check that SSL certificates are installed correctly:

    1. From Internet Explorer, select Tools > Internet Options and select the Contents tab
    2. Click the Certificates button, select the Trusted Root Certification Authorities tab
    3. Double-click Microsoft Root Authority in the list of certificates
    4. On the General tab, verify that the Valid from date is similar to 1/10/1997 to 12/31/2020
    5. Select the Certification Path tab, and then verify that This certificate is OK appears in the Certificate Status box
    6. Click OK to close this certificate, then double-click NO LIABILITY ACCEPTED in the list of certificates
    7. On the General tab, verify that the Valid from date is similar to 5/11/1997 to 1/7/2004
    8. Select the Certification Path tab, and then verify that either This certificate is OK or This certificate has expired or is not yet valid appears in the Certificate Status box
    9. Click OK to close this certificate

    Sorry for the delay Arie, I was away on business for a while. However, I came across the Time/Date issue someplace else and checked it then (and now again). Result - time and date is correct, time zone is correct.

    Had a look at the SSL certificates:
    "Microsoft Root Authority ": Valid from 1/10/1997 to 12/31/2020 with "This certificate is OK "
    "NO LIABILITY ACCEPTED, (c)97 VeriSign, Inc. ": Valid from 5/12/1997 to 1/8/2004 with "This certificate has expired or is not yet valid "

    The only difference as far as I can see is - you state only "NO LIABILITY ACCEPTED" nd I find "NO LIABILITY ACCEPTED, (c)97 VeriSign, Inc. "
