Ok, I'm working on a laptop for a friend, it currently has XP Pro, but it is not valid. I found this out when I began downloading updates for it. When I checked the Microsoft label underneath it read Microsoft XP Home.

Our IS supervisor at work lend me a licensed XP Home, which is what she's used to anyway, soooo good deal.

    My question is:

What is the best way to go about installing the XP Home on her laptop without messing up. She isn't concerned about losing any info on it since it was her sons and he now has his own. Her laptop is a Gateway, I don't know if that matters or not but it is.

I just want to be sure that I do a good job on it for her and this website has had alot of great info and assistance.

    Thank you!!

Unfortunately that is not a good deal - you may only install a single copy of XP from a specific installation CD on one computer. If you install the lent copy you will be unable to activate it unless that copy of XP is no longer installed on another computer and you can convince MS to that effect when you try to activate it over the phone - internet activation will fail if that copy has already been installed elsewhere.

The serial number you have on the base of the laptop would be valid for the original copy of XP which was delivered (pre installed) when the laptop was new. I doubt that the copy you have been lent would accept that number, but you can, of course try.
