I have installed SP2 for XP Pro and now all my USB ports do not work ---no response at all. Windows Device manager, under USB hub says the USB Root Hub driver is not installed. I give permission to look for the driver, but XP responds that it can not find the driver.

I have been told the driver is in the most recent version of sp2.cab. I can not seem to find a place to down the sp2.cab file( so that I can extract the most recent USB driver files).

Where is the WIN XP PRO, sp2.cab file located? Is this the right approach?

    Thanks

    Welcome,

It sounds like you have a botched SP2 install. Uninstall and reinstall it but this time kill all of your unnecessary startup programs.

You should find SP2 listed in Control Panel Add/Remove Programs.

After uninstalling and before reinstalling, just for informational purposes, test your USB ports to see if they returned to an active usable status.

THANKS for the reply. Just as a check, using the ADD/REMOVE programs to remove SP2 will do a clean removal back to SP1, with no problems to re-install SP2. Don't want to create any more problems.

In ADD/REMOVE Programs there are two entries with SP2 in the title "MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB925672)" and "MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978) ". Should I remove both or is there some other program that does not have "SP2" in the title that needs to be removed?

    Thanks, krazykat.

Neither of those entries are Service Pack 2 for XP - they are service packs for Microsoft XML core services - leave them alone.

When you installed SP2 a copy of the files changed should have been made - or at least the option given to do so - long time since I installed a standalone SP2 and you should see in Add/Remove Programs - Windows XP Service Pack 2.

If that entry exists removing it will take you back to where you were before installing SP2.

If the entry does not exist your only option is to install SP 2 'over the top' - i.e. just reinstall it.
