    Hi All,

In my system I have two hard drives. The main disk has the system files on the C: drive. I use the second disk for backups using XXClone. I think surferdude2 is one of the proponents of this useful program. The way I use the two drives is to disconnect one or the other depending on what I'm using the drive for. When I want to use the backup drive, the C: drive on the main disk is disconnected. Upon booting the second drive, I get the messages: "No IDE Master H.D.D. Detected" and then "Power F1 to resume." When The F1 key is struck Windows loads normally. Operating this way is not a great problem but I wonder if something is missing from my software since I have no idea what the IDE Master is. Can anyone shed some light on this situation. Thank you.

Are the jumper settings on the disks master and slave. If you disconnect the master then you have to set the other disk to master.

    Liverpool,

Thank you for your response. I use Cable Select on the drives. Under this condition the active drive becomes the master and is the system drive when the one drive is disconnected. This occurs as a result of the XXClone process and has worked well. My concern still has to do with the subject title.

I suspect that's a matter of drive position on the cable. That would be a BIOS inherent thing that you have little control over.

I just leave mine both connected and dual boot them. If you don't want the pause screen, just edit the boot.ini file and set the timeout at 0. Then when you want to boot the second drive, just press the F8 key during bootup and select "Return to Boot Selection screen." Works for me.

The beauty of XXCLONE is that it configures the Registry to swap drive letters so that whatever drive you boot will be dubbed the C: drive.

Look in the BIOS settings for something like Quick POST or Quick Boot. Set it to Disabled (No). What I think is happening is that Quick POST is just "remembering" the last startup and is trying to run the other harddrive, which is not there... "No IDE Master H.D.D. Detected ".

    Thinking again
For CS, you will need to run the boot drive on the end of the cable (otherwise it will give that error, then boot through to the slave drive [after F1])

    mattmam and surferdude2,

Each of your recommendations works. In each case the nag messages are absent.

Matt.............. In BIOS, under the Boot Setting Configuration, the Quick Boot was Enabled. Following your advice, I Disabled it.

surferdude2 .............. Following your advice, I modified the boot.ini file and and now have the choice of booting to the main drive or the Backup drive.

My thanks to each of you for your interest and support.
