What is DIEmWIN.exe?

Googled it, and can only find out that there are some other people wondering the same thing, but nothing definitive.
Nothing came up on a Forums search here, so I thought I'd poll the masses.

As for the pages that I came across while Googling, it would seem that some people are *guessing* that it has something to do with a graphics process shutdown, but no one is making a definitive statement anywhere.

I ask this because my computer freezes when trying to play various games. I've noted that people having the same problem are doing so with games and graphics cards unlike mine, which lead me to assume that it is not X game company's software, and that it is also not X chip manufacturer's video driver.

Another interesting point is that it does *not* come up in a Start->Search, even with the "scan all folders" and "scan hidden files and folders" option checked.

The basics of my machine are:
Dell Dimension 8400
Pentium 4 3.0GHz w/HT
1 GB RAM
Windows XP Home Edition SP2
ATI Radeon X300 w/128MB VRAM
Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit

If anyone needs any kind of detailed system information, please be so kind as to point me in the direction of some nice freeware that would do the trick of scanning and filing it so that I might post it here.

Are you getting errors related to the file in question?

Try the following to see if it shows up.

Copy the bolded blue text below to a blank notepad, then save it to the desktop as;

Filename: findDIEmWIN.bat
Save As Type: All Files (*.*)

dir /a /s C:\diemwin.exe >> DIEmWin.txt

Double click the bat file to run it. It will create DIEmWIN.txt on the desktop showing the location, if found.

Note: If your operating system is installed on a drive other than C: you will need to adjust the path in the batch.

 

Here's what happens:
I'll try to play either Half-Life 2 or Counter-Strike: Source
The game will hang.
I'll try one of the following to attempt to get back to a state of control: Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Ctrl+Esc, Alt+F4, or even the Windows Logo Key
I'll get an error message saying that task manager has crashed.
I'll get an error message that DIEmWIN.exe has crashed.

But here's the deal, and here's why I put it in Windows XP forum: other people have had the same problem playing Quake (Googled) and one of my friends has the same problem when he plays Command and Conquer: Generals. Also- the person with the Quake problem was using an integrated graphics card that wasn't ATI- it was Intel if I recall correctly (I didn't know that they made integrated graphics).
So, it seems that this mysterious file isn't just the problem of one game manufacturer or one chip manufacturer: it seems to be a bit more universal.
I could be wrong, and I apologize if this post is misplaced.

Also, the results of the search came up empty =(

 

Look in the event viewer to see if it was logged. Probably an Application error, but may be System. It might show the filepath.

You might also search the registry for that filename.

If still no luck, do the searches again (registry and batch) in safe mode.

I saw a post elsewhere on this site where someone was talking about booting with only 13-odd processes running in order to improve gaming performance... Perchance, were you that person? And if so- could we talk about the services that you load to game?
