How do I find out what is wrong?
    Problem

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the Stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try chaging video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

    STOP: 0x00000008E
Was a driver indicated on the screen - details essential please.

If this is a one off basically safe to ignore. If it is persistent we need to see dump logs if the computer BSOD's ....

Have you checked that the computer is set up to give a dump file? Outlined in the thread I posted and points to this KB article ...

Preparation Before You Contact Microsoft After Receiving a STOP Message on a Blue Screen

When you run the debug wizard you have to Browse to the location of the dump file - C:\ by default.

BTW the Debug Wizaed does not install on the computer - it is a standalone executable - when you need to use it just double click on the .exe file.

It's OK, but can be very large depending on the amount of RAM installed - Kernel dump is fine - and uncheck 'Overwrite ...' just below .

Did you research the error code? Sounds like a hardware issue. Could be RAM or harddrive.

If you look in Event Viewer (Right click My Computer icon > Manage > Event Viewer > System & Application) are there any errors, flagged with a white cross on a red ground recorded when you booted up this morning? If there are double click on message to open and on the icon beneath the up/down arrows to copy to clipboard and post here.

    Bob

The dump data should be in the root of C:\ .....

C:\memory.dmp - may be something other than 'memory', but it will have the .dmp extension.

Navigate to where you saved debugwiz.exe, double click on it to run and by the box 'Dump file to be analysed' hit the Browse button and navigate to C:\memory.dmp, highlight it and click on OK. Then click on Generate log.
