    Sychost.exe takes 100% CPU.
This problem occurs upon starting the computer and slows everything down.
From time tio time the computer becomes very slow and Task Manager shows sychost.exe taking 90% to 100% CPU.

Suggestions to improve the situation will be most welcome.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS Forums !!
    -----------------------------------------
First, let's check your spelling ...
    You stated sychost.exe.
If above is true, very likely you are infected.
If you are infected, read this and post in this forum.

If the correct spelling is svchost.exe, we will need additional info.

    Hi,
Thanks for suggesting that the name should be svhost.exe, which upon closer inspection I find that it is.
Now we know this, what additional info is required please?
    Thanks,
    Clive RH

    Quote from MS ...
To view and or post a list of what is running within the file, read this provided by Computerhaven.

Before you post a load list, we need a beter understanding of the following phrase(s)..
    (A) This problem occurs upon starting the computer and slows everything down.

    (B) From time to time the computer becomes very slow and Task Manager shows sychost.exe taking 90% to 100% CPU.

    Phrase (A)
We need a approximate time in seconds this activity lasts. Depending on how old of a computer, how much memory you running, and how many processes are listed in Task manager can dramatically influence this time value . Also, some services may require "update checks" via internet .. are you on dialup or broadband service.

    Phrase (B)
Does this occur when you do certain activities, example "Printing" or other hardware devices loaded. If yes, how long. Again, we could be at a resource thresh hold or their may be a real problem.

    Hi Dennis,
Many thanks for your reply. The first reply to my query suggested that I download 'RegCure' which claims to be 'free' and 'svhost.exe' specific. I downloaded the program and it performed a scan. 1137 'problems' were found. I was asked to 'register' at which point money was asked for around $29. Mmmm...not to 'free' then? I'm new to 'the board' so perhaps I should have realised that it was an advert!

I next received your message and the questions it poses. Here are some answers that may help:
The slow-down / sluggsh problem is persistant for around 20 mins after switch-on. It can re-occur but at no specific point or with no specific task - it appears to be random - or at least to me.
The computer is a few years old maybe 4 to 5.
    Hard Drive is 20gb
    Free Space is 4gb
Memory is 512mb using Pentium III, 107mhz
    Format: NTFS
At present, 'Task Manager' lists some 50 activities to which can be added around 6 for svhost.exe

    Does any of this help?

Any opinion re the RegCure program?

    Many thanks,
    Clive RH

I suggest you forget RegCure and download a trial of jv16PowerTools - it is not a crippled trial like so much other trial software, but fully functional. It is rated among the best and the Registry Cleaner is straightforward to use - always accept the offer to make a backup of what is fixed/removed :)

BTW - do you have Office on that box?

    Hi PeteC,
Yes I do run 'Office'. Does this make a difference?
    Cheers,
    Clive.

Possibly - the URL posted by segejames references Office Update as being a possible culprit ....
    Would you check this please.

    Thanks for the help.
I've downloaded and used jv 16 Power Tools and cleaned the registry.

I need to use the system for a while to see if things have improved.

One thing though, I notice that when I drag a 'window' or 'dialogue box' around the screen , it leaves a 'trail' over any open 'window' or 'box' below. Looks like a graphic card error(?) - Strange thing is, that before the registry clean this wasn't happening.

Should I worry? Is there anything that I can do? Any suggestions?

    Cheers,
    Clive RH.

I have seen those trails related to memory usage.

When you get to the desktop or you start seeing the trails, look at the performance tab in Task Manager and check that the Physical Memory -> Available is not dropping very low and the Page File Usage is increasing. (You can also watch the CPU Usage there).

If you have 50 processes running at the desktop, half of those will probably be unnecessary.

Had the same problem. Before you tinker with your system to much, Check Microsoft. They have an issue with their new update all programs fuction. It can cause this problem. There is a fix posted on their site. Solved my problem.

Be sure to install the June Updates through MS Update (Windows update) - the second part of the svchost.exe is included.
