I put this here as a reminder to others so that HOPEFULLY they do not make the same mistake(s) that I did a day or two ago.

I had removed a copule of no longer used programs. And MOVED a couple from one drive to another.
Today I had a problem with a program that I had not used in a while and it gave me a "Can't find error message. "
STUPIDLY I restored an old SR point. I cannot print my language.

5o I FRIMLY believe that after cleaning/making changes to a system it is a VERY good idea to do the same with Restore Points.

    Thoughts welcome.

    A bored/need somethinf to do

I hope you were at least able to recover from the RS point error. I quit messing with RS points. Mine have been turned off for years. Too many problems like I can't find enough as it is. :)

    Hi BillyBob!

    Since you said
I'll give you what I consider to be the "Time of Day. "

Do NOT use System restore! It is not something you can count on to save your bacon.

Use a disk imaging program and use it frequently! Store the images on separate media and sit back in confidence that you are relatively safe from anything that can get out of order with your system. It can allow you to restore your system to a point in time where it had no problems - before the virus - before your mis-step - before you erred in cleaning things up - before you ran some registry Cleaner that hosed your system. All of those and more!

Disable System Restore and get Acronis True Image or equal and your life will be much simpler. I use Acronis to make a daily image of my C: drive and it only takes 5 minutes (it makes incrementals which saves time) at boot time. It's well worth the wait to get the protection. I keep the last 60 days of those images (takes about 15 gigs on my second drive) and can pick files from them when needed. It's like reaching into the past. If I can't fix the system by any of my hot licks, I can always deploy one of the past images and return it to the state it was at that time.

You are putting yourself at risk if you think System Restore is all you need for protection. Frankly, it takes up more disk space than it's worth. Disable it and move to something better.

    Thanks for the replys.

But in my wild thinking SR in nothing more than a form of backup and just like ANY backup, if it is not kept up to date in can be trouble.

I have also created probelms when I used an IMPROPER/ANCIENT disk image.

    So my bottom line is.

If you make system changes makes sure backups are changed to suit. A few years ago a family member thought that I was going ( had gone ) nuts when I discussed this with her. Guess what, ONE bad hair day changed her thinking. Now when she makes changes she also makes new backups.

The problem with System Restore is that it restores "Certain" system files and nothing else. Most people don't know what those "Certain" files are. That can produce some strange results and often does not cure the problem at hand. An image restores ALL files, hence you don't have to worry about "orphaning" any programs due to a Registry change that left them hanging.

    Thank you surferdude2
I am getting just what I asked for.

I agree. There are better/mor complete forms of backups.

But in my case I new that the only changes that I had made were in the Registry itself so SR did bail my butt out. ( THIS TIME ) Next time ????

    Hi BB

System Restore is a strange beasty - works for some & not for others :)

For my part I have SR monitoring only the root drive (out of 17- no system files on any of the others) and it has never failed me. At the same time I make regular disk images with Acronis and also with ASR - which has also saved my bacon in the past :)

IMHO You should never rely on a single backup, be it SR, Acronis or ASR so I use all three. All my data is mirrored to other drives, internal and external and DVD and my real important Data drive is backed up hourly to another physical drive. As we say over here - 'Belt, braces & a piece of string' :D

Hi ... BillyBob , I have to totally agree with Surferdude2 , Acronis True Image has saved my bacon many of times were SR hasn't , Of all the softwares I have purchased beside Windows? True Image is the best , I left a link to their site if you like...

The song above fits this site very well. I am glad that I built that page years ago. I would not even dare try somethiing like that now.

Being able to sit here and travel world wide.
Get ideas/help from others helps BIG TIME.
Being able to make an attempt to help others helps too.

One of the biggest things I have learned is that Computers can be ( are ) very much like life in general.
What one likes the other may not.
What works for me may not for you.
Computers are very much like cars/trucks. They need to be setup to do the job we require of them. Special jobs require special equipment/setup.

But my original intent here was to remind others that when making system changes, make NEW backups.

    Have a nice day
    BillyBob
