"Another installation in progress" error

Trying to install Microsoft's User Profile Hive Cleanup Service from the MS website and it said that it couldn't install because another program was being installed... like an installation is hung up or something. How do I clear the hung installation?

Well, I tried the cleanp utility, but got the same mesage: "Error 1500. Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one."

I found two references to the solution outlined here in post #4 re. editing the Registry ...

http://forums.esri.com/Thread.asp?c=...&t=212901&mc=4

Export the registry string before making any changes so that you can put it back in the registry if it does not work for you.

I'm don't know what version of Windows the poster in the above referenced thread had, but my registery entry only went to "...\Microsoft\Windows\". There was no "...\Installer" entry. I fished around that area of the regestry but could not pick up an entry that had "...\Installer\InProgress" in it. I'm sure there is a regestry entry(s) that has me stuck... just can't find it.

There is an error in the registry string given in that URL - try the string given in this URL ....

Following the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\INSTALLER, under the expanded INSTALLER folder there is no InProgress entry. I'm starting to get a bad feeling about this problem.
