I have xp home edition sp2 and powerdesk pro 6 installed
when I first boot up powerdesk works fine and I can access it and my documents with no problems.
after being on the internet and back to desktop 15 minutes later I can
no longer access it. I can then restart my computer, after which power desk can be accessed and works fine. some time later it no longer can be accessed.
I have tried turning off my firewall, and anti virus to no avail
Any one out there that has power desk and knows about this problem please reply
I have removed and reinstalled per tech support instruction and they are unable to offer a solution. I have also replaced my mouse.
    This one is a beaut!!

I received info from tech support but they didn't list the name/number if it was a patch. I have just emailed them and requested info on patch 7.0.4.3 which I found as a result of your question. I did not find a download for it. Do you know of one? Thnaks for your input

I guess they are hangin' you out to dry. That's not a very good example for something that professes to be an improvement. ;( I haven't used PD since ver. 4 so can't help you much.

I would suggest that you run EVENTVWR.MSC and see if you can connect an error listed there with this malady.

    Good luck with your quest.

Just got an answer from tech support and they report the download you supplied is for System Suite not for PowerDesk

Try booting to safemode with networking and browse the net from there for a bit. Then see if PD acts the same way. If not, it would indicate a conflict with some kind of software you have installed. You could then use Msconfig to try to track it down.

I don't know what else to say. I've used PowerDesk 6 for a long time without any problems at all.

One more thought. Does this only happen when you use IE? If so, you could try running it without add-ons and see if this problem occurs. To do this, right click on the IE icon on the desktop and select start without add-ons.

    Power Desk alternative...

    hawkeye,

I used PD (ver 4 & 5) for a couple of years, then switched to DirectoryOpus 8 and never looked back. If you don't get any satisfaction from PD support, maybe you want to take a look at DOpus. Info can be found HERE. There is a fully functional 60 day trial available HERE.
These guys (GP Software) do a very good job and the few times I've had to contact support (lost license, questions, etc) have been outstanding. Good luck.

    PowerDesk malrunctions

I have spent the afternoon going baackwords, fortunately I could look at system restore and see the major security changes I made in the past week and there were several. Now I have reversed the changes and so far it is working. Your suggestions of the safe mode and IE add ons will be tried next if what I have done doesn't resolve the problem. Also thanks for your suggestion about another program.
Some days the bear gets you and somedays you get the bear. I think it is now my turn.
I am reversing changes to my firewall uninstall of counterspy and windodws defender and it seems to be working. I was trying to strengthen my virus protection and I may went too far and something is conflicting. I have been at it most of the day and am stopping for now. Tomorrow I have to get a broken tooth extracted so I want to relax before I go through that.

    PowerDesk Pro 6

I have found that the problem is related to Internet Explorer 6
I have not been successful at changing various IE6 settings and
    eliminating the problem.
Therefore I have chosen to take the following actions hoping to
    resolve the problem;
Remove PowerDesk Pro 6 and install version 5 which I have
    Install Internet Explorer 7
If this doesn't work I will have to revert to restarting my computer as a
means of reactivating Power Desk when it does quit on me.
I will keep looking for a final solution.
Thanks to those who offered possible solutions.
When I get time, will try safe mode to try to isolate the problem.

I guess I sort of goofed. I was thinking you had IE7. Since you have IE6 the option to start it without add-ons won't be there. Still, my guess is that it's an add-on of some type causing the problem. I could be way off base here but I used IE6 for years with PowerDesk 6 and have never had a problem. This would lead me to believe it's not the browser itself that's causing the problem, but something that IE uses is.

You could try uninstalling any add-ons that you have in add-remove programs. Things like toolbars or the spell check program ieSpell, etc. Have a look and see how many you have. In IE, click tools>internet options. On the general tab click the settings button under temporary internet files and then click the view objects button. My guess is it's one of them that's causing this.

    PowerDesk Pro 6 malfunctions

I have remove all currently installed PowerDesk and related data.
Reinstalled PowerDesk6 Pro with a fix supplied by tech support.
I can now access and use it with the following pecularity,
At startup and closing it will flash a black screen for a couple of
    seconds. This never happened before.
I have been unable to find an adjustment to overcome this and
    Tech Support has no fix.
To their credit, Tech Support has been very cooperative and made a good effort to resolve my problems. All this done via email, they have a pretty good system and respont quickly.

PowerDesk Pro 6 Malfunctions - SOLVED!

    I installed PowerDesk Pro 5 in C:\
and left PowerDesk Pro 6 in Program Files\VCom where is was originally installed.
Now I have 2 PowerDisk Pros installed, 6 which is not fixed and PowerDesk 5 which is working perfectly. PS; I removed 6 and 5 would not work!! So I put it back on.
    Now ain't that a crazy imaginative fix??http://www.windowsbbs.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
    :)

Yes, and much better than anyone had offered up to that point. Hoorah for you! :D

It sounds like one of those shared DLL things.

My thoughts exactly. If you uninstalled 6 and then reinstalled 5 you'd probably be good to go.

    PowerDesk Pro 6 malfunctions

    I do not follow your logic would appreciate further help;
    uninstall 6 and reinstall 5
5 is already installed and working
if I uninstall 6 which I tried, 5 then failed
are you saying uninstall 6 and reinstall 5 over top of ?
as you can see I am confused

Well, you have both installed now. 5 works and 6 gives you fits. When you uninstall 6, 5 quits working. That's my understanding.

More than likely 5 quits working after 6 is uninstalled because both of them install and use the same dll files. Uninstalling one of them would remove the dlls created while installing and this would break the other program because it needs those too.

So, if you didn't want to have both versions installed using up extra space on your hard drive (6 doesn't work anyway) you should be able to uninstall 6. Yes, this will break the version 5 install but if if you reinstall 5 after you uninstall 6, it should work. Reinstalling 5 will put back the files that uninstalling the other one took out.

LOL, after reading my last post again, it's probably just as confusing. So here's the short version.

    Uninstall version 6. If 5 quits, re-install 5. It should work. :D
