Microsoft Update is very insistent that I install the junk filter update for Outlook. However, though most of Office 2003 is installed on my computer, Outlook is not. I have Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

The yellow alert shield pops up every few minutes. I have chosen Custom Install and unchecked the junk filter alert many times. I checked "do not notify" for the alert, but a few minutes later, it's back. I had also checked the do not install choice originally on the Microsoft Update page.

Is this continual nagging because I had selected the download-but-don't-install-automatically option in automatic update? I have since changed to notify-but-don't-download. Any suggestions for losing the Outlook alert?

    Windows Update is acting appropriately.

The GDR point for your Office install apparently has the REINSTALL flag set to All.

You can "fix" this be reinstalling and manually forcing the REINSTALL flag to only the applications you actually install:

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ork2003/HA011525681033.aspx
    http://office.microsoft.com/search/redir.aspx?AssetID=HA011363171033&CTT=5&Origin=HA011525681033

Your repository at %windir%\$hf_mig$ has the Office suite set for REINSTALL=All.

Windows Update appropriately then attempts to add the Junk Mail Filter to your catalogue, as the GDR point has indicated that it is possible the application may be installed at a later time.

Let it add the update to your catalog.

I don't consider myself a tech wizzard, but I'm no dummy either, but I'm afraid your reply to this Bill is uncharacteristically cryptic... I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about!! :)

As I was suffering the same problem as lee2000, I read the links you provided to see if I could sort the problem - it was way above my head though!

In the end I manually downloaded the update from here and installed it. (Even though I don't even have Outlook 2003 installed!)

Update also available from http://www.mrtech.com/news/messages/5483.html if you don't like to follow blind links.

The installation seemed to take about 15 seconds, but it wasn't until about 2 minutes later that a pop-up appeared to say installation was sucessful! I then visited Office Update to check the update KB913161 was no longer listed as "required ", which it isn't!

    Problem solved.

    Cheers,

    Andy.
