Unable to defrag large file

My E: partition has a 3GB file which I can't defragment. Have tried the XP home defrag and also Power Defrag, either way I end up with this (Mysql DB Index) file in hundreds of pieces, and that is a problem for me.

Here's the Windows defrag report for that partition:

Volume usr (E: )
Volume size = 9.77 GB
Cluster size = 4 KB
Used space = 4.45 GB
Free space = 5.32 GB
Percent free space = 54 %

Volume fragmentation
Total fragmentation = 31 %
File fragmentation = 62 %
Free space fragmentation = 0 %

File fragmentation
Total files = 10,195
Average file size = 591 KB
Total fragmented files = 1
Total excess fragments = 444
Average fragments per file = 1.04

Pagefile fragmentation
Pagefile size = 0 bytes
Total fragments = 0

Folder fragmentation
Total folders = 846
Fragmented folders = 1
Excess folder fragments = 0

Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation
Total MFT size = 86 MB
MFT record count = 11,059
Percent MFT in use = 12 %
Total MFT fragments = 2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My System
Looks like you have plenty of free space which is the usual thing about files that won't defrag.

How about some attribute in the file itself that is not allowing defrag. Security permissions maybe?

If any SQL services are running the file could be in use and not allowing it to be defragged.

Wanted to post back that I've fixed it. I don't think it was the mysql server running because I rebooted and tried again.

What I did was make a network copy on another box, then went to that machine and defragmented the partition with the 3 gb file, but it was all in one piece anyway.

Then I deleted my local copy, cleared the trash and defragged the partition. Then when copying again from the network share onto my local partition it came in as one piece. I ran defrag then fine but it wasn't even needed, ended almost immediately.

Marty,

Your way would surely work, but it does not have to be this hard.

The issue defrag was having is that it needs at least 1.5 times the used space on the volume as working room, even for a single file.
Used space = 4.45 GB
Free space = 5.32 GB

You do not fit.

In the future use the freeware utility Microsoft/Sysinternal's Config for the individual file deframentation: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sys...sk/Contig.mspx
