Open notepad and copy/paste the following:
Quote:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll.
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 Softpub.dll
regsvr32 Wintrust.dll
regsvr32 Initpki.dll
regsvr32 Mssip32.dll
Then do a File, Save as, and save the file as c:\fix_defender.cmd

Finally Start, Run, C:\fix_defender.cmd

If prompted, agree to any registration approval.

Reboot.

Your error code indicates a problem with the Windows Update service, which is where Windows Defender checks for its definition updates.

If after the reboot the same error code is thrown, start Internet Explorer. Then Tools, Windows Update and do a Windows Update session. If Windows Update throws an error, please write it down and post back to the forum.

WD won't start

Hi, I posted earlier regarding this problem which I had on 4 Home PCs. What I did which fixed all of them was to remove WD from system through >control panel> add or remove programs> then downloaded latest version 1593 from Windows Update. Once loaded it updated and ran scan. All AOK. Try it. It's simple to do and it sure worked for me. WD version I had on my PCs expired 31/12/06. Neil.

Remember as well that the Final Beta of Defender expired 12/31/06, so if you were using that version you need to uninstall it, and install the Windows Defender final version.

That issue can explain your error as well.
