Hello first post, Nice forum very interesting.

Small problem thats irritating me, I bought a lap top the other day and its hooked up to wireless router so the Ethernet adaptors not being used.I get the icon and the poup in the taskbar that says its not connected so i disable it in Network connections and it goes away but when i reboot it comes back.
    How can disable it completly?
I know its minor but its really bugging me :)

The easy out is to disable the notification message and let the rest alone.

Start > Connect To > Show All Connections > right click the network connection that is causing the problem > Properties > untag both of the boxes at the bottom.

If that doesn't give relief, you must disable any program that is in your Startup Group that may be reenabling the connection. Run MSCONFIG and look under the Startups tab to see what that might be.

Try disabling the port in system BIOS.

    Start, Run, devmgmt.msc
    Expand the Network Adapters subsection.
Right click on the wired adapter and selected Disabled.

    Disabling Network Adapter

    Go into device manager.
Right click on "my computer "
    > properties > hardware . device manager
You will find an alphabetical list
    Look for "network adapters "
There will be a plus beside it on the left
    Select the plus
Find the appropriate network adapter - you should see the two.
    Right click
    Choose "disable "
There should now be a red "x" beside that network adapter.
    Now the card is disabled.
To enable right click and choose "enable "
There is also a setting in the network connection "show when disconnected " or something like that.
If you uncheck that box you will not get the warning in your tray.
However the card will still be on.

Do as visionof instructed EXCEPT rt click the adapter in Device Manager and then click Properties. Then at the bottom of the Properties dialog select "do not use this device ". This will place a red X over the device in Device manager & prevent the device from being used. Reverse to enable.

The adapter usually cannot be disabled any other way because the required services (and their dependancies) it uses cannot be stopped by simply choosing "disable" at the various places to do that.

If XP had a core services exception to the disable, it would have said so. It would not have permitted the device disable and then restored the device at the next boot.

What the user does not have is the ACEs and ACLs needed to make a persistent change in network components. This is actually a fairly common issue with XP Home preinstalled, as when the image is made it is done under the default Administrator account. The account is then cleaned, and along with gets cleaned the standard set of NTRIGHTS that should have been left.

One way around this is to use NTRIGHTS.EXE from the Resource Kit and add back the missing ACE permissions. Under XP Pro you can use secpol.msc, or GPEDIT to repair the issue.

Simpler is ususally to take the block of ACE permissions alloted to the Network Configuration Operators group and grant them to users:

Start, Run, net localgroup "Network Configuration Operators" Users /add

XP Home does not come with lusrmgr.msc, so a command line needs to be used.

Even with XP Pro, this same issue arises in Domain settings, usually for laptop users. The laptop users often need to vary network configuration settings, and find that they cannot, even if there is no Group Policy barrier to doing so. They need to be added to the Network Configuration Operators group to inherit the NTRIGHTS needed.

Start button, Run, then type: net localgroup "Network Configuration Operators" Users /add
