Word documents opening in wordpad

Hi all,

Have a strange problem that i can not figure out. My word documents are all opening up in wordpad.
If i open up word and then open the documents then i am fine. If i open the same document outside of word then it opens up in wordpad. I looked at my documents folder and all of my documents are now in wordpad. Any help would be appreciated. I can not change the file extension as it will not give me .doc

In Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab > DOC

Can you change the "Opens with:" program to "Microsoft Office Word "?

thanks for the info. What i did was right click on the document, and do an open with. Once i did that all of my word documents changed from wordpad to word? Any ideas on why this would happen? I feel like i have gremlins running around.

I expect when you right-clicked on the file and used the "Open With" context menu item to select "Microsoft Office Word ", Windows changed its default File Type association for .DOC files to Microsoft Office Word.

If you had used the Open With > Choose Program context menu item, you would have been presented with a selection of "Recommended Programs" at the top of its program list. Below the list of programs in the "Open With" window is a check box for telling Windows to always use your selected program for that file extension (.DOC). I expect using that check box would also have achieved the same result as I the method I suggested in my post above (post #2).
