Brief computer information - XP Home SP2, 120GB internal HDD partition to (C:) system drive (all programs and associated data files) and (D:) drive for system image files, and media files. Also have an USB attached 200GB external drive (E:) for backup to internal drive.
The following updates where applied Nov 15, 2006 .....
MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978) - Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - November 2006 (KB890830) - Security Update for Windows XP (KB924270) - Security Update for Windows XP (KB923980) - Security Update for Windows XP (KB920213). No systems Errors - MS update site said all applied successfully - successful reboot.
Concerned / Confused ... see attached text file set in a Zip file due to site size restrictions
One day later I notice a Folder named 56900c2a0fe971e2cf647ba6d5b069 with msxml4-KB927978-enu.log text file sitting in root of my USB attached external (E:) HDD (XP status as a "Local Disk"). This drive was attached / enabled during MS update process. When I read through this text file it references (E:) drive AND (C:) during the install process.
KB927978 is displayed in "Add or Remove Programs"
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978) view states it is available for uninstall, Change/install/repair.
Add/Remove Pro program also finds the update.
It states MsiExec.exe /I{37477865-A3F1-4772-AD43-AAFC6BCFF99F} as the uninstall string. Add/Remove Pro has a built in search feature -- It can NOT find the uninstall string. Agent Ransack can not find the uninstall string checking C/D/E drives. Can not find any uninstall values for KB927978 in WINDOWS folder.
Summary
Like I said in the beginning, I'm confused. I think this update was applied, but NOT sure. WHY did it write a log to my external drive? Is this log required for uninstall? With numerous references to (e:) drive during the install process, moving it to (C:) drive is questionable??
What is my next step??

I cannot speak about Add/Remove Pro, but not every update hits the Add/Remove Program listing. In this case you have an entry.
But I am sure that Add/Remove Pro is wrong as to the uninstallation of any KB based Hotfix. It is done in the SPUNINST folder for the KBXXXXXX of the Hotfix.
Use Explorer and examine the blue colored entries at the top of the \WIndows folder. One of the Blue colored folders will look something like $KBKB927978$ and Explorer will show a subfolder SPUNINST.
You would use Spuninst.exe from that folder to remove the Hotfix; or as it is listed in Add/Remove, let that applet handle the chore.
Now the question is why you are doing this? Is it because there was a reference in the logs to your removable external hard drive?
This is normal. XP will use for temporary storage purposes the connected drive with the most free space.
It creates temporary folders named similar to yours: 56900c2a0fe971e2cf647ba6d5b069 It usually cleans up after itself when done with Windows Update, but not always.
Go ahead and delete the folder 56900c2a0fe971e2cf647ba6d5b069 as it was to be used temporarily only.

As stated in previous post, I did check there, and again today, but I can not find any $KB927879$ listings. This was one of the reasons / concerns why I started the thread. ADD/REMOVE has a listing, but WINDOWS folder does not appear to be housing the uninstall process. Again Bill, thank you so much for clearing this up ...... much appreciated.

I have had a similar experience with this file. It showed up today (one day after creating a new partition). Just want to know 1) if I can just delete it with no ill effects and 2) does deleting the file completely get rid of it?
As was said earlier, it is a temporary file created by Windows Update. Normally it is cleaned by the update process, but sometimes it misses the file, especially if auto created on the non-system volume.
My apologies. When I posted, I saw no responses to the original question - not sure why. Maybe it had something to do with the link I followed when I Googled the kb.
KB927978 says it installed successfully; keepts retrying
Every time I log in, this update is the only one on my Windows Update notification list. I download and install it, and the final window says that the update was installed successfully. When I restart, the cycle starts over again ... and again ... and again. Always claims to have installed successfully.
It was reissued, so you likely have received it more than once.
Download "today's update" for MSXML 4.0 SP2 as it replaces the one you're
trying to install:
Save it, do NOT run it, close the browser, and then attempt to install
it. If it fails to install, open the KB927978.log located in the WINDOWS
directory (folder) and copy&paste it into your reply, please.
I followed your advice with no change. There has never been an uninstall directory in C:\Windows for KB927978, nor has there ever been a log file there for it. There are numerous uninstall directories and log files for earlier patches. Microsoft Update only lists this one patch as needing to be installed.
I downloaded from the link you posted, closed all applications, clicked on it, and the update installer gave me three options: Modify, Repair, and Uninstall. This indicates that it thinks the update is already installed (which it is!) I selected Repair, and it worked for two seconds and said it was successful. This has happened before. The notification icon still says there is an update waiting. I restarted the PC, and after logging in, the Microsoft Update program says that I have one update to install: KB927978.
Next, I looked at the Modify option, and it indicates that the only thing I can modify is to install the XML SDK, which is optional. It recognizes that the other portions of the update are already installed, because it indicates they would take 0KB of disk space.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
I am having the same problem on 2 of our XP machines here. The MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (925672) and the MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978) both keep showing up as needing to be installed. They appear to install OK. They appear in the "Installed Updates" list [many times!] and they keep on coming back and wanting to install. I feel like the Sorcerer's Apprentice!
Same here, weird install directories keep appearing all over my non OS partitions and the XML updates listed here keep showing up as needing to be installed although though show up as installed under "Add / Remove" programs. *Any* help appreciated. I have tried looking through the install logs in the trash directories it leaves and uninstalling and letting it reinstall to no avail. Windows update site shows nothing as needing to be installed, it is only auto-update.
I had pretty much the same problem. I downloaded the hot fix [See link in message #10 above.} and, when I invoked it, got the options to install, repair, or remove. I chose remove, removed the fix, then invoked the fix again and installed it. Things settled down after that.
Apparently the problem is an incomplete install that causes the system to think it needs to be installed, but then blocks installation.
Yeah thanks Microsoft. I'm getting pretty tired of Microsoft again. I have been using Microsoft for some years as the alternatives seemed too hard to manage. I have downloaded myself a copy of Suse Linux and I may start using that. Setting up and maintaining that would take less time and hassle than this stupid system.
I have completely reformatted my computer and I am *still* having problems. Sound card drivers playing up (Audigy 4), crashes, etc. I have Zone Alarm Pro installed, is this a problem?
