Print Program List

Can anyone tell me how I can print the list of programs I have in my 'Programs' folder, please? I'm getting a new computer and wish to have an inventory of all the many programs I had on my old one. In the 'Programs' folder I highlighted the list and chose 'Copy'. However, I can't seem to paste it into any text document because, naturally, it tries to copy all the PROGRAMS into it. I've tried the 'Print Screen' button but nothing happens either. Thank you.

For your immediate purpose and many other reasons, I recommend that you download the free program called Everest. It will allow you to print out all the installed program file names as well as other useful information that you may need later.

Wink

Even better, in my opinion I hasten to add, is Belarc which even checks for security updates.

As above on Belarc

Odd, but I just ran Belarc on my Vista installation and it reports the OS as Windows 2000 Pro!

Thank you very much, Surfer, Roger and Bill!

I couldn't find an option on the 'Menu' of 'Everest' for accessing the 'Program' files on my computer. It seemed to me to simply give details regarding the computer itself.

'Belarc' was excellent in the details it provided both of the computer itself AND the program files. The printout was all that one could desire.

Karen's Directory Printer provided me (when configured to my requirements) with a simple list of my programs. It was sufficient for my needs.

I'm much obliged to you all

With Everest open click on the + next to Software then click on Installed Programs. Right click anywhere in the right window and select Copy All. You can then paste the list.

I must be missing something, or Everest doesn't work fully in Vista, because I have no reference to 'Software' when I open Everest!

The problem is, Whiskeyman, that I can't find the 'Software' you mention. I've searched every item in the menu. My version is the Home Edition. Might this be lacking the 'Software' option?

With some research, it seems that the free home edition ver. 1.51 is no longer available and the new free edition has dropped the "Software" category. Progress...

If you can get hold of the old version, it will be a nice tool to have. I'm not sure how you could do that however or if it would be legal since the author has removed all links to it.

If you have the old 1.51 ver., obviously you should not upgrade.

You can get the old version (1.5) here: http://cocoricow.free.fr/Everest/
and the 'Software' section is on it.

Several of the old versions of Everest (including 1.51) are available here
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=everesthome

For purpose of printing the contents of a folder, Karen's Print Directory, as has been mentioned, is excellent though it takes a little configuring.
What I do is use a little .bat file
Copy this into Notepad

dir %1>"C:\Documents and Settings\James Sauvage\Desktop\yourname.txt"

cls

and save as yourname.bat. Then put this .bat file into your Send To folder.
When you right click on the folder|Send To|yourname.bat a file (yourname.txt) will be created on the Desktop with the names of the files in the folder. You can print that out.

SIW 1.64 is another system information program that will work with all versions of Windows including Vista. When I open it, Installed Programs, is listed in the left hand window. Click on it and you can right click on the window to the right listing all of your programs then copy & paste them.
