    Seeing I was having troubles with IE, I not only did a registry clean, but I also uninstalled IE through the Windows Add/Remove Windows Components in the Control Panel.

    But upon rebooting, after I open the Control Panel, and as soon as I hit the button called "Add/Remove Windows Component ", I get the following error message:

    ------------------------------
    Setup was unable to open information file netoc.inf

    Please contact your administrator. This specific error code is 0x2 at line 2088999592
    ---------------------------------

    I've tried google, and all the suggestions don't work. When they give me the "CMD" commands, there is always something wrong with the syntax that is not understood by windows.

    If you know how to replace this netoc.inf file with a new one, or repair it, or whatever, please outline in very nice detailed instructions. It would be much appreciated. Thank you.

    You may want to post what you are trying to do.

    This should work:

    1. Insert your WinXP CD
    2. Go to Start > Run. Type in: Expand D:\i386\NETOC.IN_ -r C:\Windows\Inf, hit OK

    Where D:\ is your CD drive, and C:\Windows\ is the drive & directory where you have your OS installed.

    I've had the same issue

    What I tried was run ' %SystemRoot%\Inf\Sysoc.inf ' and remove ' HIDE ' from lines Also tried system restore, but that has not fixed it either

    The file can be found several places:

    On my machine:

    \WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\netoc.inf
    \WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB817778$\netoc.inf
    \WINDOWS\inf\netoc.inf
    \WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\netoc.inf

    First make sure it is not already there, as there may be some other issue.

    Look in \WINDOWS\inf\netoc.inf

    If no joy, please reinstall IE and see if after a reboot the issue goes away.

    There is another way around this issue:

    Open Windows Explorer and go to Windows/Inf
    In the right pane, scroll down to sysoc.inf, double click it. Scroll down to:

    [Components]
    NtComponents=ntoc.dll,NtOcSetupProc,,4
    WBEM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wbemoc.inf,hide,7
    Display=desk.cpl,DisplayOcSetupProc,,7
    Fax=fxsocm.dll,FaxOcmSetupProc,fxsocm.inf,,7
    NetOC=netoc.dll,NetOcSetupProc,netoc.inf,,7

    Change the bolded line to:

    ; NetOC=netoc.dll,NetOcSetupProc,netoc.inf,,7

    Save the file.

    After reinstalling IE (You might as well use IE 7 Final), remove the ";" from the start of the line.

    Windows Update Feedback 0x2 2088999592

    Hello Bill
    I found netoc.inf I tried restore hidden updates but I get an error message
    This installation does not support your current service pack version
    When I try to reload SP2 disk it tells me I do not have SP1 - when I try to load SP1 it tells me I already have SP2

    In my emails I find this response from Microsoft Support
    'winupsup@microsoft.com
    The recipient's mailbox is full and can't accept messages now. Microsoft Exchange will not try to redeliver this message for you. Please try resending this message later, or contact the recipient directly'

    Now I'm really confused & frustrated but still convinced I can get this issue sorted out
    What more suggestions can you make
    Thanks a lot :eek:

    If you edit sysoc.inf, the error will go away. See my second response above.

    I have never seen a sysoc.inf file look like that. For example, mine reads:

    Your file is not from an XP Client, but a Server installation. You can Start, Run, cmd
    and then type Winver if you like.

    But no XP version, for example, has a DNS Server and a WINS Server configuration line in its Add/Remove Programs listing.

    Much better.

    Now edit the line highlighted below to make it as shown with an ";" at the beginning of the line:

    Exactly.

    Now when you do Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs it will not demand the netoc file.

    Then delete the line completely. (We have enough copies of the text in this thread to restore it).

    We need to find out if it is now another entry it is complaining about.
