    HI All

I changed my boot.ini setting to "safemode with command promt" safeboot:minimal(alternateshell) for a routine virus removal. I used this option as I could not get my startup options during reboot with F8. Now my computer is stuck in safemode with command promt.

Would anyone be helpful enough to provide me with the command lines for changing the boot.ini. (remember Im a complete novice and swear to have learned my lesson).

I can restart and now get my startup options with F8 but of course choosing any (e.g. start windows in normal mode) has no effect as the safemode with command promt is choosen in the configuration.

    Regards

Stuck in safemode with command prompt

So far Ive managed to get to the boot.ini with the following?

    c: <press enter>
    cd\ <press enter>
    attrib -r -a -s -h boot.ini <press enter>
    edit boot.ini <press enter>

I think all i need is a command for unchecking the Safeboot/minimal (alternateshell) that has me stuck on rebooting with safemode with command prompt.

Could I just replace the following:
    multi(0)disc(0)rdisc(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition "/Fastdetect /NoExecute=OPTIN /safeboot:minimal(alternateshell)

    with:

multi(0)disc(0)rdisc(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition "/Fastdetect /NoExecute=OPTIN

save and restart. WOuld this just put me back in normal boot.ini and "normal" startup??

Id appreciate it if you could check over this for me.

    Thanks

    marlow..

    Hi Marlow,
    Any progress?

I think I may have added to my post before you have come back. Either that or you have overlooked the link I included. I have since given up on finding some easier way of editing the boot.ini in NTFS from dos. If you are unable to get into windows, the recovery console and bootcfg.eve are equal to any options I discovered. The direction walkthrus are in the link previously provided. Procedure could be made easier if you have dual boot setup on fat32 xp. Do you??? Should have asked this before.

You stated that your only option is "safemode with command prompt ". Can you get into windows in "safemode with command prompt "? If so, this may not be difficult at all as you have a few options. One would be:
Once your in windows and at the command prompt...
    >Type sysdm.cpl
This will bring up the system control panel.
    >click on the advanced tab
    >In the category "startup and recovery ", click on the settings button
    >In the category "sysem startup ", click on the edit button
From there it's just a matter of removing the /switch you added.

Once you back at command prompt type exit. Hit cntl/alt/del keyboard combo to bring up task manager and from toolbar click on shutdown>restart

    ----------------------------
Guess we did it again... Either you or I was busy adding to post and we crossed paths. I just now noticed you had added an additonal thread. In any case removing the switch /safeboot:minimal(alternateshell) will return you to normal startup. Using the method you are currently doing or the one I suggested, which may be easier, should get you there.

Didn't want to overwhelm you with info overload but all this could also be done closing the command prompt and using various methods via taskmanger. It all boils down to there being "more than one way to get the job down ". I'll leave it at the one suggestion I made though, as this will get the job done. :)

Just a precaution to make sure you have noticed the previous post I made above this one^ and the addtional information I added, after we crossed paths. ;)
