I have a Compaq Presario PC with :
    AMD Athlon 1800
Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 (up-to-date)
    40 GB HDD
    Realtek NIC
    Broadband Connection
    Symantec Anti-Virus
    Spybot-Search and Destroy
    Windows Defender

I have noticed 2 problems since mid-August. So far, I,ve been unable to find a solution for any of them.

    First Problem

My problem is as follows :
    1) When I click Start>Network Connections, the Network Connections folder view appears and it shows
    (a) Broadband Disconnected Firewalled
    (b) LAN or High-Speed Internet Connected Firewalled
    2) I now double-click on Broadband and after entering usercode and password but nothing happens. Folder view display remains as @ (1) above ie. Disconnected Firewalled.
    3) I right-click on an empty space and the context menu pops up.
    4) I click on Refresh
    5) The folder view display changes instantaneously to show Connected Firewalled.
    6) I proceed to work on the Internet.
    7) After my work is completed, I right-click on the Broadband icon and then click on Disconnect. Nothing happens. Folder view display remains as @ (5) above ie. Connected Firewalled.
    8) I right-click on an empty space and then click Refresh.
    9) The folder view changes instantaneously to show Disconnected, Firewalled.

I have therefore concluded that while manual Refresh works in Windows Explorer, the auto-refresh has somehow stopped working in the last fortnight ie. changes in underlying folder object is not automatically reflected in the folder view.

    Second Problem
Clicking on "Find Target" in a short cut properties page does nothing ie. doesn't take me to the target file.

Pl. help me find a solution. Thanks.

    Thanks Charles for ur response.
As advised by u, I've run sfc /scannow from the cmd prompt.
This has not solved the problem.
I may add that prior to this I tried a System Restore. For all previous restore ponts it said "Restoration Incomplete ". I then switched off System Restore and have now restarted it.
I've also done a complete scan with Symantec Anti Virus and again with Spybot. Microsoft Windows Defender is also active.
Pl. let me know the next step.
    Thanks once again.

    Checkpoints:

. Is an exception made in the firewall for Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) service? It should be.
. Is UPnP enabed? It should be.
. Is UPnP enabled on your router and modem? It should be.
. Is the Application Layer Gateway (ALG) service running? It should be.
. Is the SSDP Discovery Service running? It should be.
. Is the Shared Access/ICS/Firewall service running? It should be.

    Hi Bill,
    Thanks for ur suggestions.

But I'm a bit confused now. Isn't UPnP to be used in case of networking more than 1 PC in the house ? or for Internet Connection Sharing ?

I do not have a requirement for any of them. I have only 1 PC and the only connection it has is to the Internet. This is through a LAN card(NIC) and using PPPoE.

Should I still try your suggestions given earlier ?

    Regards - pkp

UPnP has wide uses, including informing XP of the status of your NIC and broadband modem.

    Thanks for the clarification.

I have checked my PC for the points raised by you.

Everything was ok (ie. all services mentioned by you were running). Only UPnP setting under exceptions of Firewall was not checked. I have done that too.

But the situation remains the same. The problem remains.

    Pl. help further.

    Regards - pkp

    Stage 2 then:

Copy the below and paste into a new Notepad session. Fix the space in the word Control in the third line by removing the space. Then in Notepad use a File, Save as...., and save the file as fix_view.reg "

------------ begin copy/paste below this line
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Update]
    "UpdateMode "=dword:00000000

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
    "NoNetCrawling "=dword:00000000

-------------- end copy/paste above this line

Double click "fix_view.reg" and agree to merge with your registry. Restart XP and test.

BTW - I have no idea why spaces like the above appear.

Bill - it's a quirk of the Board software - enclose in Code tags ....

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Update]
     "UpdateMode "=dword:00000000

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
     "NoNetCrawling "=dword:00000000

I've done the copy/paste and then merge to update the Resistry.
I'm sorry but it hasn't worked. Problem continues.

In the meanwhile, I've been searching MSDN Library of Microsoft. I've come across a topic "Implementing Folder View Option ". This speaks of how a folder view has a folder view object and in turn a child object.

When a view is changed by user, Windows Explorer uses ISHELLVIEW::UIACTIVATE to update the folder view object.

When an underlying change is made by user to the folder object (as in case when "Netman" changes the current status in the Network Connections folder object), the method used is ISHELLBROWSER::ONVIEWWINDOWACTIVATE.

From my understanding of the above :

    1. Netman is not properly updating Folder object.
    2. Folder object data is not being properly reflected by Windows Explorer in the folder view.

I feel there may be some related registry entries which may have been corrupted.

Hope I don't sound very much confused.

    Regards - pkp

I just cannot replicate your problem. My status change for both the Network Connection Folder and the notification tray icon is nearly immediate.

    Let patch with KB884020: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884020/

It may not seem appropriate from its description, but it sorts some very odd and assorted issues under XP SP2.

In conjunction with the patch, its time for another registry edit:

------------------ begin copy/paste below this line
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\IPSec]
    "AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule "=dword:00000002

------------------ end copy/paste above this line

In Notepad File, Save as..... fixview.reg
Double click to merge with your registry.

Restart your computer once both are applied.

Thanks Bill for your continual efforts.
I've downloaded and installed KB884020 and the registry patch given by you. Then restarted the PC.

    But, sorry, it hasn't worked.

Waiting to hear from you again.

At the BIOS level do you have any Event 47 features: Wake on LAN, Wake on PCI event, Wake on USB, Wake on Ring, .etc.

If so, could you disable them as a test?

Here is a note from Technet from May, 2005 that I think is related:
Also, you are not alone. I found at least one person sharing your grief: http://www.duxcw.com/yabbse/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=18925

    .

No hurry, I am going to be inside Vista all day.

The world has really come a full circle !!!

The problem you have referred to from www.duxcw.com is really mine. If u observe the dates you'll find the thread was only upto August 24,2006. Because I did not receive any meaningful assists, I decided to change the forum. That's how I'm with you all now.
By the way my ADSL modem is from Trendnet.
And how do I know whether "teaming" is enabled in my PC ? nIf this was the problem, how was my PC working fine until mid-August.
I still feel we need to concentrate on the Registry.
    Regards - pkp
