Can't burn or copy DVD's

Hello,

Since a few days my girlfriend can't copy or burn DVD's anymore.
I'm not talking about copyright protected DVD's.
Even DVD Shrink doesn't work.
Windows opens up itself and tries to play the DVD while it is being copied and the copy process ends with an error message.
She uses Nero to burn. But again even copying the video folder doesn't work.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Number of possibilities here ....

If you hold down the Shift key awhile when the DVD is inserted this will bypass Autoplay

Autoplay may be playing up - try running the Autoplay Repair Wizard.

Can she burn or copy CD's? AFAIK different lasers are used in the burner for CD's and DVD's

Uninstall the DVD writer through Device Manager and reboot to re-install it.

Bottom line possibility - the drive is defective.

I burned an avi file onto DVD- that worked fine.
I will try your suggestions and will let you know.

Cheers :-)

The drive works fine and files stored on the Notebook can be burned.
They can't be copied since the Autoplay always starts.

The Autoplay fix doesn't recognzie the DVD writer since it is an external drive (connected via USB).

Uninstalling wouldn't probably work either I guess since it is probably located under the USB tab.

Do you or anyone else have other tips?

Thank you.

If the computer is running XP Professional and not XP Home Edition:

Start, Run, gpedit.msc

Navigate to:

Local Computer Policy
Computer Configuration
Administrative Templates
System

Double-click on and Enable the policy "Turn off Autoplay"

For either XP Pro or Home, the same effect can be achieved with a registry edit.

Start, Run, regedit

Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom

Find the value "AutoRun"
Right-click the value, Modify, and set its value from 1 to 0 (that is zero).

Reboot and test.
