I'm what you may call computer stupid, so please bare with me on this. I have just purchased XP. I want to reformat, get rid of everything on my hard drive, and install XP. During the installation process, can I assign a password so that no one can even use the computer without knowing the password? I'm not talking about individual accounts. Can XP keep everyone out when the computer first boots up?

If each User Account on the computer has a password no one can get past the login screen without entering their password.

Yes - if every account has a password and autologon is not enabled.
During the instalation process you will be prompted for an Administrator password and that will be the only account set up. When Windows is fully configured you may then add other User Accounts and passwords.
However if f you are looking at preventing any of the authorised users from accessing their accounts without your knowledge you can achieve this by setting up a user password in the BIOS and keeping the password to yourself. This password will be necessary to boot the computer. Not all BIOS's will support this - take a look at yours.
