Blue screen error during XP Pro install

    First of all I just want to say a quick hello since this is my first post. I'm glad I found this BBS.

    But anyway onto my question, I'm attempting to install WindowsXP Pro on my desktop computer, this is the model I have:

    It originally came with media center but I've never used any of the media center features. I decided to make a clean format so I could just set it up with a copy of Fedora Core 5 and XP Pro, I had no problems installing Linux but when it came time to install windows I ran into some problems. I partitioned one of my HD to NTFS so I could install windows on it but when I started the install it never detected my hard drives and promply locked up and gave me this error message : STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xF74139A8, 0xF6FEE75C, 0x00000000)

    setupdd.sys - address F74139A8 base at F73EC000, DateStamp 41107c8f

    after some research I think the problem might be I need updated (and need to install them with the F6 option at the start of the install) drivers for my hard drives in order for the install to detect my hard drives. Sadly I cant seem to find the right drivers. My chipset is Intel 915P and my hard drives are 160GB WD Caviar SE (7200rpm)

    At this point I would be content to just be able to use XP pro and worry about setting up a duel boot for another day. I've thought about buying the recovery DVD's they have for my system through their online store but I rather only do that as a last resort. (strange the system didnt come with recovery CD's...)

    No go, I removed my 4 512MB chips and swaped out one at a time, same error message every time. I dont think their is anything wrong with my RAM.

    You are correct in your assumption that you need to load the SATA and RAID drivers at F6 during Windows setup. According to your machine spec you have a floppy drive, otherwise it would not be possible to install the drivers.

    Question is, where to find them - really need to know the motherboard details. There are chipset drivers available through the download links on the URL you posted, but no mention of RAID drivers.

    There is little point in buying the CD/DVD set from Sony unless you want to restore the computer to Media Edition. You mention that no recovery disks were supplied - they were not needed as, according to your spec the computer was supplied with recovery software - Vaio Recovery Wizard. Before you partitioned the drive there would have been a hidden recovery partition - may still be there - containing a mirror of the drive as supplied.

    Well, "don't think" usually doesn't 'cut it' if you know what I mean ;)

    Start by testing your memory. Run Memtest86 or Windows Memory Diagnostic.

    I'd also try with 2x512MB and see if that works...

    Yes, my system does have a floppy, I just havent been able to find the right drivers, as you said there arnt any on the link I gave for SATA or RAID drivers. As far as the hidden partition for recovery it should be gone, and my attempts to find it proved fruitless, like I said I did a full format of my HD's. I'm starting to regret that more and more, my reasons for wanting to buy the recovery kit is atleast I'll be able to use my system again since my search for drivers has been a wild goose chase so far.

    As far as my RAM goes, before I came here I didnt try swapping them out and using a small amount of RAM but I did check to make sure they were all working properly. They should be anyway, all four are less than two months old. I also tryed your sugestion of using 2x512 and that didnt work as well. I'm convinced this is a driver problem.

    I'm not sure where I should look for the drivers though. I have looked on Western Digital's site and Intel's site for the drivers but I've had no luck. As far as finding out the exact model number on my motherboard I'm not sure where that would be located.

    Assuming you have thoroughly looked at your mobo among all the attached hardware, have you taken the mobo out of the case and looked at the back side?

    Not yet I havent, I was hoping I wouldnt have to rip the whole thing out, its a small case so everything is packed in very tight and I'd hate to damage anything by accident. The back is the about the only place I havent looked yet.

    I would run the memory testers - the Windows version at least runs from a floppy on boot. At least that may eliminate memory as a problem area. New RAM can be faulty :(

    Thank you I will use that to find out what my mobo is. Yes MCE would prolly install without a hitch but I dont own a hard copy of MCE only Pro.
