[Problems installing] Windows Fax.

I am having a Pentium-III with 256 Mb memory and winXP with SP-2. I tried to install FAX from the add/remove windows panel. It started installing the FAX but started giving error messages about unable to copy files eventhough these files were shown in the i386 folder and also in the winXP Professional CD. Accidently these files were skipped and the fax installation was declared finished.
I could see a fax folder in the All programs / accessories / communications but it is empty. tried to reinstall the fax several times all with the same result.

Has any one faced with similar problem ? I would appreciate any help to clear this problem and install the fax?. I am new here and posting for the 1st time.

Cannot install Fax windows component

Arie - I've read the info above and I don't think it applies to my situation. When I try to install the Fax component it asks for the SP2 CD (which I don't have.) This is a new laptop w/xp SP2 preloaded, and I'm sure I don't have a corrupted security log - in fact I don't have a file named ......scecomp.log. I also don't have a fax dll (fxsapi.dll) that the install process is looking for, but i do have a 'fxsapi.dl_' file, suggesting that perhaps an installation process has yet to convert it to a .dll file ?? Any help you can give me on implementing the Windows fax s/w will be much appreciated. Thanks

I doubt you'll be able to install without the CD. Check to see if you have the setup files on your hard disk.

Arie - what setup files should I be looking for on my hard drive? I can see all the necessary files for FAX on my hard drive in an I386 folder but as I said, they're all compressed, e.g. Fxsapi.dl_ rather than the needed Fxsapi.dll. It's as if the SP2 was loaded but not initiated... if there's a Setup program to go through these folders/files and 'uncompress' them, I'm sure I'd be home free in getting my XP Fax s/w running.... frustrating knowing the fax s/w is there but not being able to use it!

Use the Expand command.

Asked and answered here: Cabinet self-extractor for XP SP2 drivers

Please do not create new threads. It does not help you or other Forum members to get you support any more quickly.

All - sorry, I stand corrected.. I'd thought (naiively) that my quest would reach a wider audience.. This is a great BBS and I'd hate to abuse it.
