    Hi SueC,
What's the program? What's the file? What's the "quoted error "? Did you actually uninstall this program while you had it or did you just delete it's folder and files? We need a wee bit more of the detailed history.

    Sue,

You can try the Microsoft Windows Installer Clean Up utility. Information for its use and the download can be found HERE. If this doesn't help post back. ;)

There still may be an easier way out of the problem you find you self in. With out the details, I mentioned previously, that are needed, I'm unsure how much of the information, provided below, will be needed, but since this may be learning experience for you, I'm going to provide the additional information any way. Don't let it scare you out your quest for help. I certainly don't mean to chase you away with to much information leading to an info overload.....

Error 1706 is a windows installer error. As you can see from the above link ^ , usually accompanies an install or uninstall that was incomplete or messed up in someway. Often this is followed by the user, in desperation, to delete folders or files related to program. This is not a clean way to get rid of any program that leaves bits and pieces of its self throughout your harddrive. It sounds like you still have a load line left somewhere calling for the program at startup. The most common advice your going to find is to reinstall the program again and uninstall it in the conventional manner recommended by the program, generally through the add/remove software icon in the control panel. Sometimes, even this "reinstall to uninstall" method may require a cleanup of the windows installers reference to your previous installation of the problematic program. This tool may help:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301 Read carefully through the directions and keep in mind that your only interest is in the program that's throwing the hissy fit.

    Hi again Sue,
Try the windows installer cleanup tool as suggested. It can't hurt. If this doesn't work we may be able to find some other way to cleanup what ever is asked to load at startup pertaining to this program. I suppose it can't be as simple as something still left in the "add/remove software" section of the control panel, or a run line in startup as may be indicated by msconfig>startup tab.

Wow! The program or rather the lack of the cd required for the program "Salesperson Exam Prep" is definitely going to throw a monkey wrench into the "install to uninstall" method. Any way of getting this again or contacting the people you got it from in the first place? Is there a support forum for this or someone who supports the software that you can contact?

Can you explain a little further by what you mean by the statement "It wont let other programs start "?

As you deleted the program by removing the files rather than uninstalling it conventionally Windows still thinks it is there :)

Follow Ann's advice to look in the startup tab of msconfig ( Start > Run > type in msconfig > Enter). If there is reference there uncheck the entry.

You may find it easier to use Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel

There will also be innumerable references to that program in the Registry and these need to be removed. If you are not familiar with the Registry back it up before you do anything ....

How to back up, edit, and restore the registry in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003

Download Regseeker , ensure that the Backup before deletion box is checked and search the registry for references to Salesperson Exam Prep and delete them.
