An interesting curiosity. After several years with no problems my renamed My Computer and My Network Places have decided on a number of recent occasions to revert to their default names. This spontaneous renaming also affects the Save As boxes and even the display in PowerDesk 5.

Certainly not a major issue but it is an irritation and offends my orderly mind. Any suggestions?

I have just (couple of hours ago) renewed the CMOS battery, which was down to less than 0.25v. Although I can see no conceivable connection with a flat battery, I wonder if the names will be more stable in future.

It's possible, even likely, the names revert to their defaults for the same reason other customizations (like folder views) do...installing a Windows update.

If that's the case, there's nothing you can do to prevent it short of never installing another Windows update...never a good plan. ;)

Hmmmm! That does seem to be a possible explanation, although I carry out the updates manually, so I would likely be aware of the sequence 'change - update - change'. Even so, it's certainly another point to bear in mind.

Oh, and yes, I agree with you about the updates, although I usually delay for a few days and check the MS newsgroup for any reports of 'issues'.

    If that explains anything.

They are "system folders" and are somwhat more complex than the ordinary file folders.
