Problem resetting Desktop Screen after virus recovery

My PC was infected with the warnhp.htm virus about a month ago. I was successful removing the virus, but it took a few days to get the Desktop to display anything other than a blank page....Today, I got a warning that my PC was infected with the UNINSTDSK.EXE Trojan Horse. I went through Symantec and Norton and followed all the steps listed, but I still can not change my Desktop to anything but a blank page.

It's different this time (from the last virus) because 1) my Desktop: Web is cleared out; 2) I see the different Desktop screens I can pick from, but I can't scroll through them or select one. I can only change the color of the screen.

It's the same as last time because when I shut down, I get a quick glimpse of my original Desktop screen.

I updated my virus scanners, etc. and last scan didn't find anything. So, now I don't know what to do. Can anyone help?

Please download HijackThis through Quicklinks in my signature and save it to a folder on your hard drive, say C:\HJT - not to the Desktop or a temporary location. When entries are fixed with HJT a backup is made to the folder from which HJT is run and this must be in a permanent location.

Boot into Safe Mode and open the folder and run hijackthis.exe. Select Scan and save a logfile - this will be saved in the folder from which you ran HJT.

Reboot into normal mode and post the log here.

a few months ago i experienced the warnhp.htm problem on a friends computer. the virus had created a page that exists over the top of the actual desktop. when i had dealt with the virus it left a blank page just like you described. but when i scrolled to ran the cursor to the top of the screen i found a drop down toolbar that had and x at one end and a down pointing arrow at the other end. when i clicked the x the page went away and never came back. i am not sure if this will help but i thought i would comment just in case. good luck.

Here's the log. Also, when I booted up to normal mode from safemode, I got the message "Invalid Backweb application id "137903".

What application were you in when you scrolled? Thanks - I'll need the luck!

Please download the trial version of Ewido. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu". Do not run it yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode and run HJT again, selecting Scan only. Place a check mark against these entries and click on Fix Selected ....

Stay in Safe Mode and run Ewido

Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. Please select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Reboot into normal mode and scan again with HJT - post the HJT log and the Ewido log here.

Right click on an empty area of the Desktop > Properties > Desktop Tab > Customise button > Web tab and delete all web content - if present. You will only see the Web tab if you are running the standard XP interface - I run in Classic Mode and do not have that option.

Be very, very careful with Ewido. One of the "gurus" that is on this board used it on a buddies laptop and completely ******* up EVERY program that he used EVERY DAY!

I've had much luck with Spybot, AdAware and HJT, all in safe mode, of course, and run only after shutting off System Restore and manually cleaning out all users temp internet files. Works every time.
