I have an emachines desktop that recently crashed. I replaced motherboard/power supply and upon restarting It said that my copy of windows was not registered. I then bought an OEM copy of XP from Newegg and installed on my computer-but I lost the COA sticker that came with it! I still have the receipt and the packaging that came with the OEM copy. I used the COA code that my old Emachines had on the back of it and it accepted it. I then registered the copy of XP via phone with Microsoft's automated system which gave me a confirmation code to enter in to activate the new copy of XP. Everthing is working fine now but I have 2 questions. 1) Is what I have done not legal in their eyes? and 2) Is it possible that I never activated that copy of XP two years ago and this COA was still good? I would appreciate your thoughts, Gary

garynkc - Welcome to the Board :)

    My take on this ....

If MS accepted the COA everything is strictly legal and above board. If MS had any doubts you would not have been able to activate automatically and would have been connected to a representative to plead your case.

The original copy of XP factory installed on your emachines would have been pre-activated by HP - I doubt that particular COA was used.
