    Hello Everyone.....Brand new to the board....my first post!!! Anyway, I go to Run > msconfig > startup tab and uncheck the items I do not want to run at startup, and the click on OKAY. So far, So good. Then I get the message "You must restart your computer for some of the changes made by system configuration to take effect ". So I click on "Restart Now ". Upon restart, I get the message that tells me I've made changes to the way windows starts.........is currently in diagnostic or selective startup mode......go back to startup tab and choose "normal" startup mode to reverse the changes that I've made. So long story short, I can't edit my startup items.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks

    If you see this message,
    it worked for you. Have a look in msconfig again to see if those you unchecked are still unchecked. If so, all's well.

    All that message is telling you is that you've shut some programs off and if you want to re-eable them to go back and re-check them. You can ignore the message. It's only there to remind you. When you see the message at startup, there'll be a line that says something like "don't remind me again ". Put a check in the box next to it and you won't see the message again until the next time you use msconfig to change things.

    Thanks Z. You are right.

    So bottom line is that I should leave it in "selective" startup mode rather than "normal" startup mode and check the "don't show this message again" box?

    Thanks Again

    Yes, I probably should have stated that. Selective mode probably isn't the best of terms for it. Just means chosen to not run some things. ;)

    If you want to permanently stop some startup item, there are usually 2 options;

    1) Open the program and in the options or preferences you can tell it not to start with windows.

    2) Go to the Registry key mentioned in msconfig and delete the Run command. Also in your Start/Programs list, go to startup and delete the entry corresponding to the program in question.
