I need some help with a stop error that I can't seem to get around. I was trying to install a new 4-port KVM switch, but the switch would not allow me to get to my main PC after it was powered on. I had to just power it off. I unhooked the new kvm and hooked up the old one and restarted my PC. When it started booting, chkdisk ran and said that it fixed some errors on the drive then windwos came up. I noticed that Zonealarm was not up so I restarted the pc and that's when the problem started. It will boot as far as the windows splash screen then reboots. I was able to go into safe mode at first, but decided to try a repair install of windows. Everything went fine until it rebooted then the continuous reboot problem again. I pressed F8 and turned off the automatic reboot, this is how I found the stop error. Since I started the repair install, I cannot get to safe mode any longer. I really would not like to have to reinstall windows and all my software and hardware, so if someone has any idea how I can get my system back up I would appreciate it.

Here is the complete stop error message; Stop 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF7EE14D0, 0xF8B4FFC8, 0xF8B4FCC4).

T here are a lot of causes for this, like hardware incompatibilites, or device driver errors. Is there a file referenced in the error?

Would try again and, if no joy, consider an install to a new folder or another partition and reinstall all drivers, upgrading them if possible. Maybe remove the old install manually afterward.

No file name mentioned in the error. I would really like to repair this rather than reinstall if at all possible. I can't figure out what happened that caused this problem, especially since it booted up then on the restart the problem occurred.

I had to get this machine back up and running so I've formatted the drive and started over. I first put the hard drive in another machine and copied all the files off the C partition that I wanted to keep, including email. Then I put it back in the original machine and formatted and reinstalled XP. I couldn't find where it had created any dumps. I'm going to make sure it is configured to create them now so that if I have a problem like this in the future I'll get one.

Thanks for the replies on this, if I had more time I would have liked to find out what caused this problem, but the need to get it back up was more pressing.

So called "Mini dumps" are by default in C:\WINDOWS\Minidump. Full memory dumps are in C:\WINDOWS.
