i have been to the ollowing site and completed(i think) the first step, but i dont know how to access the windows directory to delete remaining files manually.

or is there a better way?
    keith
    http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/howto-21.html

    below is a brief explanation

    Select Start > Run
Enter RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall in the Open box, and click OK

Click Yes to confirm that you want to remove the Microsoft VM

    When prompted, reboot the computer
    Remove the following items:
    The \%Systemroot%\Java folder
The file java.PNF from the \%Systemroot%\inf folder
The files jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%Systemroot%\system32 folder
The registry subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Java VM
    The registry subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ InternetExplorer \ AdvancedOptions \ JAVA_VM

Note I: With \%Systemroot%\ is meant your Windows directory.
Note II: To delete a registry subkey, start the Registry Editor,
and navigate to the key by clicking on the + signs.
When you have the correct key selected, right-click, and select Delete from the menu.

Why do you want to get rid of MS Java? A number of sites/ISP's still require it.

MS Java and Sun Java will happily cohabit - I have both.

I've never run into a site that complained... and I've removed Microsoft's VM from my system for years!

I was reasonably sure that when I installed the software for BT Yahoo - my ISP that MS Java was loaded. I have subsequently checked the CD contents and MS Java is included.

I think Keith's comments bear out the fact that MS Java is needed for one ISP at least.

    Keith

    Install them both :)

keithsince59--Going back to your original question.
(Since I understand you already have done the RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall bit, you might just as well complete the removal.)

How do you "Remove the following items "?

In the instructions given, substitute the name of the harddrive for "\%Systemroot%\ ". For most people that is usually C:\ .
So the first line of the instruction would read "the C:\Java folder " You reach C:\ by clicking on My Computer. Click on the C: drive icon and look for (and delete) a folder called Java. And then you would look for an INF and the System32 folders, open them to find and delete the other files.
The final two instructions are to edit your Registry. You enter the Registry by Start|Run|type regedit|OK. Navigate means to "get to" the two keys mentioned by clicking the + signs at each step.
However, before you do any deleting, it may be best to back up the Registry so that you can restore things if you do not like the results of the deletions.
You do that by Registry File|Export. That creates a .reg file (give it a name.reg and put it on your Desktop where it is easy to access). If you need to restore the Registry, right click on that .reg file and click Merge.
If that does not get your Yahoo Spades back, perhaps uninstall Java and then reinstall.
    http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
Have a look at IE Tools|Internet Options|Advanced tab and see what it says under Java. Does it say Java (Sun) and is the box checked? If not, do so. If necessary uncheck any box that says MS Virtual Machine.

You can reinstall MSVM (Java), but it is a pain. And this post is long enough already.
