    Hi all,

I have been using service pack 2 on my xp o/s since it was released. Recently I have been encountering an error that is not allowing me to download updates and it crashes some programs as well. I have searched the microsoft site and cannot find any help with the problem. I keep receiving a basic error that says Windows Service Pack Setup has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have searched the web and can't find any solution either. I have a screenshot of the problem and the error report that comes up if that will help. I have tried to uninstall service pack 2 but I get an error stating service pack uninstall has encountered an error.
Has anyone encountered this before or can lend a hand on how to fix this.

    thanks

    Rob

Hmmm... is there any additional information in your Event Logs?

To open Event Viewer, go to Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc, click OK.

Check your Application and System logs for errors.

You can double click on any error for more details, and there is also a button to copy the error to your clipboard for easy copying & pasting.

I think this is where your problem lies - setupapi.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180

As this is a system file I suggest you try to run System File Checker.

I ran the system file checker and everything seems to be okay. Nothing is reported to be incorrect (is there anything that pops up if there is a problem?) After the scan finished, I attempted the updates again and the exact same error message appears and in the same location.
As far as I can tell, I did the check correctly. It ran the scan and then once it finished the search it can back to the black cmd screen. Is there something else I need to do after that?

    thanks again

    Rob,

Nothing "pops up" when SFC replaces any files. You can find the information in the EventViewer where you found your error messages. Try to track it down by checking for a corresponding "time ". HTH

As far as I can see you ran SFC correctly - SFC runs and exits without any closing dialogue. To see which files, if any were replaced look in Event Viewer - System.

There should be two entries as shown in the screenshot - any files which were replaced would be noted by events between these two points.

    No, that's the correct version.

I suggest running the WGA Diagnostic Tool

Running it should tell you if your system is being recognised as genuine:

alright! now we are getting somewhere...I am not sure where though.
I ran the wgadiag on my system and it varified that it is genuine. I check the event viewer and it did find a couple of files that it needed to fix. They were all similar to
    Event Type: Information
    Event Source: Windows File Protection
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 64020
    Date: 5/8/2006
    Time: 7:17:37 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: COMPUTER-XM38P1
    Description:
Windows File Protection scan found that the system file c:\windows\system32\nv4_disp.dll has a bad signature. This file was restored to the original version to maintain system stability. The file version of the system file is 6.14.10.6177.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

The only thing that was different about the four items shown is the file version was different on each one. I just tried to run the update again and this time there was 4 updates needed to be downloaded. It still had a problem with the first two files I have been having a problem with and the two newer ones went through without and problems. Kinda weird.
I still have the service pack error pop up on other programs though. It doesn't actually close the program I am working on though. I just can't figure this out at all.

thanks for all the suggestions so far

Try updating your NVIDIA display adapter driver.

You are definately onto something with something happening with the driver. I just went in to try and update it and I now get an error saying Microsoft Management Console has encountered a problem and needs to close. That is the only item in my devise manager that shuts down when I try to have a look at it. I will check with their web site and see if they have any updates.

    thanks again

I have tried to update the driver and each time I attempt it, the install shuts down at about 30-40%. I have tried a couple of different updates and a couple of different ways (driver downloaded to hard drive and from the divice manager) Is there another way or location to try it from?

    thanks

    Rob,

Try downloading it to your hard drive, then you need to uninstall the old nVidia software using the 'Add/Remove Programs' in the Control Panel. Then reboot your computer. You may want to try turning off you antivirus program while installing the new driver (don't forget to turn it back on). Sometimes your a/v program can interfere with an install. Good luck. HTH

    Hey guys,

Thanks for all the help on the problem I was having. I am still having the problem with my nvidia driver. I found out that I am using just the basic vga driver not a nvidia driver. I have not been able to update it or in fact install the proper driver as it crashes during the install everytime. It doesn't matter if I do it from my hard drive or cd. It starts to install then an error message pops up and shuts it down.

    any other ideas?

    thanks

Try booting the computer into Safe Mode and installing the driver from there.

    Hi Pete,

I gave safe mode a try and it doesn't work either. I went to device manager while in safe mode and it didn't show any problems with the driver there. I tried to update the driver and the same error message came up as before. I tried to uninstall the driver and another error message came up again. Is the card shot or is there something else going on?

I decided to physically uninstall my video card, try cleaning it up a bit from dust and reinstall it. Everything went pretty smooth and it still works the same as before. Still has a driver problem. I thought I would see if I could show it as new hardware to reinstall the driver. I did get an error message but it is different than before...Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
Does this make sense to someone on the list? I understand the concept behind it but do not know where in the registry to look or how to fix it. I think this could be the problem but am not sure

    thanks

    Rob
