Hi, I recently had a store format my pc. When they set it up they left the "registered to" as USER. How do I change that to my name. I am the only user of this machine.

    I tried this fix :
How to change registered owner`s name on Win XP
    1- Run regedit
2- Find and go to below key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version
3-Change your name in following subkey :Registered Owner

    Still reads user

Hi Pete: In control panel-system it reads now registered to me. How ever my programs ie word, excel, powerpoint still read user. We made the registry fix after these programs were installed. If I want them to read my name I must uninstall and install all of them?

    Another question about "User ".

My Start-up folder is called "User" and I would like to change it to my name or another nickname. I, like Bimmer Guy, had had work done in a shop and when they re-installed Windows XP, didn't put my name in as the Registered User. I've already corrected that in the System Info and in Office, but can't figure out how to do it in the start-up folder. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Try this route ....

Control Panel > User Accounts > Change an Account > Pick an Account to Change > Change my name.

Is this what you were after?

Sorry for the delay in replying - been very busy. This is not a critical problem, but one that does nag.

Pete, no, sorry, this does not affect the start-up folder. My username is fine in the user accounts section - just the name on my start up folder is not what I would like it to be. Any time I try to change it, I get an error message saying:

User is a Windows System folder and is required for Windows to run properly. It cannot be moved or renamed.

Since I can't just rename the folder, I was looking for the registry edit that will let me do that.

    Any suggestions?
