Hi folks, hope you can help.

Sony Vaio died so bit the bullet and re-installed XP (or tried to).

Install keeps hanging at varying points, 39 minutes, 28 minutes, 19 minutes, etc.

For info, can't disable USB (as recommended), can't use boot disk (no floppy), CD is external USB (is this a problem?)

    Any other ideas?

    Help would be appreciated

Examine the Setup log files for anything that may indicate what may be causing the problem. To do this, press SHIFT+F10 to open a command prompt after the first restart, and after any subsequent restarts, if Setup stops responding. In the Windows folder (usually C:\Windows), look for the Pnplog.txt file. This log file is only created during setup if there is an issue that is detected with hardware. The log file should include the hardware that Setup will skip on the next restart.

You can also review the Setupapi.log file, the Setupact.log file, and the Setuperr.log file (in the Windows folder) to try to determine which device Setup was trying to detect when it stopped responding. To locate the device that is the most likely cause of the issue, read the last 10 to 15 lines at the end of the files.

Note: You may have to look for the last class installer to load in the Setupapi.log file. This may tell you the device class instead of the specific device.

    Hi Arie

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I have tried to access the command line using SHIFT F10, however this doesn't work. If I press and hold SHIFT F10, I get a BEEP BEEP BEEP. If I press and hold SHIFT and press F10 repeatedly, it still goes straight to "Setup is being restarted............. "

    Anything else I can try?

In what particular way - refused to boot or ??

You may have a problem with the hard drive - is there any important data on it?

Post back and we'll try to come up with some ideas :)

    Hi Pete

Thanks to you also for reply.

Vaio died? Teenage son abusing Habbo Hotel/MSN/**** Sites. Couldn't access any web sites other than ISP (BT Yahoo!) and then couldn't even read mail.

So, decided to bite (or is that byte?) the bullet and re-install, fully aware that I would be re-formating and thus losing all data.

Have tried to install XP now about 50 times. Even left off over-night just incase Laptop was overheating. This didn't help.

Can't get passed "Installing Windows ". As I mentioned in opening thread, I have got as far as 19 minutes remaining, but then all activity stops; keyboard locks; no HDD activity; Have even tried leaving it in this state for 30 mins to see if it will wake up. Guess what!!!!

Blimey! As I type, it's just managed to reach 10 minutes remaining (registering components). I won't hold my breath though.

    Miracles?

Listen, I know you guys are good, but this is spooky. Do you send vibes through the ether?

As I was replying to Pete, things started moving! 10 minutes later, here I am the proud owner of a new XP installation. It's only taken 24 hours!

    Wonders will never cease!

Thanks again you guys for taking the time and effort to reply.

Hey - that's great news :D - persistance pays off, but I've no idea why you had so much trouble - maybe a dirty CD?

BTW - you posted while I was responding :)

BTW 2 - Disabling USB would have not been a good idea considering that you were installing from an external USB CD-ROM drive :D

    Another issue

    Arie

I noticed that you are a MS MVP. I have another issue that I'm hoping you could help with.

    I have A D-Link (Neteasy) FireWire Card - DRF-A3

Since re-installing XP & SP2, the card no longer recognises my Sony DVR.

After searching on Google, I found out that the problem lies with SP2. Apparently Microsoft are aware of this, so I was wondering if you have ways of finding the solution.

I'm sorry to abuse your expertise, but you were very helpful last time.

    Many Thanks
    Shodman

There's no info on Microsoft's support site on either the DFW-500 or the UK model DRF-A3.

Everybody seems to be complaining that with the card, Windows will have shutdown problems.

Since this card has been discontinued and is no longer supported by D-Link tech support, so don't expect anything from Microsoft. The drivers are the responsibility of the manufacturer, and this card only has Win98 drivers.

    However...

See this support article: Does my D-Link Firewire card work in Windows 2000 and XP?
