It would be appreciated if someone can tell be the absolutely essential files that must be in windows startup. I wish to remove the unessential file which I do periodically however I do not want to remove anything that will harm the computer functionality.

Additionally if I could learn if there are any recommended files that would assist in the operation of my Dell Latitude D500 using widows XP Home Edition.

Type msconfig in the run window, e.g. windows-key r (used like shift-r). Any program in that list can be disabled without unhappy consequences. In fact, they’re all disabled in safe mode.

There's a good program to download called startup.exe that can hanle registry entries, too, so you needn't edit the registry. Suggest you stop all Dell programs, and any others that you can just as easily start manually when you need them.

There are windows elements that can be disabled, too, but would not go that way until you're expert.

WinFan--Just to add to what sparrow has said.
The programs listed in msconfig|Startup in WinXP are not Windows programs, but rather third party programs. So none need be running for your PC to function. However, I would urge you to allow your antivirus, antispyware (like Windows Defender) and firewall to start at boot. And if you have wireless peripherals, you may need to allow them.
If you see any program that you cannot figure out with what program it is associated, look it up here
