Can't xfer Docs from old HD to new XP copy, help.

I just installed my new mobo/processor/etc to an Athlon 64 3000+. Doing so I had to reinstall Windows. Not thinking about this ahead of time I didn't back up my primary HD. I installed Windows on my second HD, then booted up and tried to access my old drive.

The old drive works and I can get in to everything but my Documents and Settings folder, which I need to extract all of my old files to the new copy of Windows. I am running on the Admin account on this new Windows copy, but it keeps giving me an Access Denied box and wont let me in.

Is there any way to get this data off without installing the HD on the old mobo and copying the info from there?

Windows XP SP2 installed on both HD's.

I can get in to my dads folder and copy the stuff but his was a limited acct vs my admin account.

since the permissions are from a previous install, u must 'take ownership' first.

to do that, from explorer - tools/folderops/view and uncheck 'use simple file sharing'.

then go to the folder u wanna take over and do rclik/sharing & security. then see the security tab. click advanced and then see the owner tab. 'add' u'r admin account and check the subcontainers checkbox. the OK u'r way thru.

Op, nevermind. I'm retarded. I saw I didn't check the subfolders box when I went back. Got it now. Thanks.

where are u starting? u should check the 'replace owner on subcontainers' option box and just add u'r account as owner. once u do that, u can do as u wish since u'r the owner.

u MAY also wanna 'add' permissions as 'full control' for u'r account from the top level as well. eg - after u own it, make sure u have 'keys to the kingdom' by adding 'full control' w/ u'r account.

note that 'inherit from parent' is normally 'set' and u should UNcheck that and then 'copy' the current perms so that u CAN 'add' full control perms to the entire tree structure. see the 'replace perms on subs' checkbox.
