After talking to Dell's tech support, I was told to reinstall Windows (of course). Being a bit skeptical, I decided to do a repair install (neither type would have solved the problem I was having, but that's another story). I noticed almost immediately, a slowing in the bootup time--and I mean all parts of the bootup sequence, all the various screens that the monitor displays before the desktop is ready to go.

The earlier problem (possibly related) is that I had to restore the bootup sequence because after toying around with a second hard drive running ubuntu, the hd with XP would not bootup. I did a command prompt with fixmbr or something like that and that was resolved. However, as I said above, the bootup time has now legthened considerably.

    Any recommendations?

I checked this out before, because I have the same problem. It takes one of my systems about 1 1/2 from system turn on to desktop, but no where could I find a way to resolve the problem....

All I did so far was to take a log of my booup and drivers, and then optimize it. I'll check out tomorrow how it goes on a cold boot. If it still is sluggish, I'll do another log and post it here or at techguy, and see if someone can make heads or tails of it.

Unfortunately, the Bootvis document is about 85 megs--no joke. A little too much to post in a thread here, and a little too much to upload to my ISP webspace. Any recommendations on how to interpret and deal with the info provided by Bootvis? The optimization by itself evidently hasn't done any good.

    Too many security programs

I'm no expert on reading HiJack logs, but it appears that you are simultaneously running (or attempting to run) multiple anti-mal-ware programs and multiple anti-virus programs (Microsoft AntiSpyware, ICQLite, F-Secure, Symantec, Panda, Kaspersky, etc.) Each does it's own thing (and takes time) during startup and whenever file movements are occuring during normal operations. I would pick one set (or suite) and remove the others.

    Good Luck

    Paul,

I'm not sure what is included with the Charter Security Suite, but it sure appears to be a HAWG! If this was my machine I would dump it and get a stand alone antivirus program. I use NOD32, but there are decent *free* programs such as AVG or Avast that you could use. These should be fine with Ewido (I use Ewido also), I'm not sure about how msAntiSpyware (aka Windows Defender) will act in the mix, but it should be okay as it has a different function than the other two. I run SpySweeper with Ewido and my A/V with no problems, if you are limited on ram... running all three programs in the background could slow you down.
Other than that I don't see anything that jumps out of your Hi Jack log, but hang on till one of the 'experts' stops by and takes a good look. HTH

ICQ is an IM program. Symantec, Panda, and Kaspersky are only for the online scans--they don't actually run in the background, and I don't have the desktop software installed. MSAS has worked very well and I'd like to keep that. F-Secure is the only av program I have running.

RAM really isn't the problem--I have 768 megs of DDR. I don't recall ever seeing it drop below 300. At any rate, the Charter security suite (made by F-Secure) probably is a hog--it is an av and firewall program. I've tried running freeware av programs for the past couple of years (AntiVir from H+Bedv was the most recent) but someone slipped the zapchast trojan in on me, and it was only noticed because I was playing around with the F-Secure security suite. I do online banking and I'd rather not have to re-do my passwords again. Nor do I relish wondering if anything was compromised.

At any rate, I just posted my hjt log for form's sake. I have a bootup problem and I'm not thinking that its being caused by a program that loads up, although you never can be sure.
