PerfNet 2004 error

Hi ... I see this error in my event viewer log and from what I understand its cause because of my server service isn't started , I like to know what does the server service do ? Do I really need to have this started ? I am the only user on my computer and its used for home purposes , Thanks

Hi PeterC ... If I understand this correctly , The server service ( PerfNet 2004 ) is used for sharing files and printer stuff ? Also If I was to remove the " Files and Printer sharing for Microsoft Network " In the Network Connections properties I wouldn't be able to share anything at all with other computers , correct ? Because I have done just that, Also I have look at my service area and I haven't notice this service name / process name listed , Though I don't care to share files or my printer with other computers , So because I have my computer set up this way I am always going to see this error in the event viewer log , correct ? Thanks

I read an MS article about this very thing a while back. If I can find a link I'll post it but what it basically said is that if you disable file and print sharing the server service may disappear from the services list. If you re-enable file and print sharing the the sever service will show up again.

I get the same perfnet error on the puter I'm using now. It's not networked to anything so I've got the server service set to manual. Setting it to automatic will (should) get rid of the error but I don't see any sense to having it run when it's not needed. I just put up with the error. It doesn't look pretty in the event viewer but it doesn't hurt anything.

Ok great Zander , Though I probably did disable it and I have remove the files and printer sharing in the network properties area as well , I think I read somewhere if you don't use this service its best to remove it , which I have done ... Now that I know what that error is from ? I too will just live with it , Thanks
