In my system configuration, services, universal plug and play device host appear in "stopped" status.
How can I turn it to a "running" status?

    I'll appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

Right click on it and from the menu choose ‘start’.
If it is listed under “Startup Type” as Disabled then it may not start, so click Properties and change Startup type to Manual or Automatic. However, as you say the current Status is Stopped, it must already be on Auto or Manual and was either already running or at least tried to run.

If it still won’t start then go Properties again and click the Dependencies Tab and you will see the other services that this one depends on. If any of the listed ones are also not running, there might be your problem.

I’m pretty sure it was Service Pack 2 that changed the default of this service to off, because there are a lot of exploits around that can take advantage of it. What is your reason for wanting to turn it on?

    Done, although ...

In the beggining the right click was unable, though now I could apply changes suggested. Dependencies are linked to HPPT (?), which are working right.
The reason of willing to change this settings is because USB ports are not detecting any device plugged in, hence I thought this could be the reason of that, but I was wrong: no change in detection of devices ...
This is all about recovering the whole software and windows, updates, sp2, etc some days ago.
Everything works perfect but no device can be plugged in, thus the laptop became a little 'stupid' since I cannot print, connect a camera or mp3, etc.
Thanks for your prompt response and please, if you have any clue on how to get USB ports alive again, I'll appreciate your help. Meanwhile I'll check up the site linked in your post.
Thank you and have a good day.

The service you are thinking of is called just ‘Plug and Play’ the UPnP service is something different and so make sure you don’t leave it running by default.

If there is no response what so ever when you plug in a USB device then my first thoughts would be a hardware problem. Are you using any external hubs or is this when you plug directly into one of the laptop’s own built in USB sockets?

If it was a driver problem then you should still see a response from XP in the way of ‘New Hardware/Device Found’ and then a request for drivers. Look in Device Manager and see if the Universal Serial Bus Controllers are listed and that there is no yellow question mark or red cross next to any of them.

It may be worth checking all your other services to see if they are running as intended. This is a list of the typical default settings.

It may be possible that a virus or something has caused this, but I’ve never heard of one that targets only USB devices. Still, it may be worth updating your AV and doing a full scan, if you haven’t already.

Perhaps someone else may come along that has seen something like this before.
