When I put in a DVD movie, I have applications that do not show up as an option on the pop-up dialog. The pop-up has play with Windows Media Player and open folder to view files and do nothing.

Similarly, when I put in a music CD or MP3 on DVD I get pretty much the same choices. I would like to be able to search through my program files and add the other players that I have installed and have them show up on the dialog. Otherwise, I have to close out of that dialog, open the apps. that are not on the list and fidget around with that.

Download Tweak UI from MS and in the left hand pane expand My Computer > Autoplay > Handlers. Hit the Create button and fill in the details for your other apps.

I downloaded TweakUI and installed. Pretty nice. I am wondering though if it can conflict with folder options in control panel and autostart settings that you can access by right clicking on a file type or a drive that has a DVD in it or CD in it.

I wonder because my settings are all ******* up now. DVDs just autplay using the ATI Multimedia center. CDs do give a dialog but with only 2 of the 4 applications that can play them.

DVDs that contain MP3 music files are the only ones that are ok.

    Please help if you can.

Have you set up the Handlers in Tweak UI to include the apps that you want to use with DVD's, CD's etc and then right clicked on the DVD or CD drive in My Computer and selected the apps you want as default - if you want defaults - on the Autoplay tab. You may well need to reboot to apply the changes.

Tweak UI is a GUI for making safe, reversible changes to the registry. Actions available in Tweak UI may duplicate similar actions elsewhere and possibly reverse them or set up another option. Not a question of conflict - more the fact that in some cases the same item can be changed in more than one place.

It may be that there is some corruption in Autoplay - MS have Autoplay Repair Wizard. Give that a try - it will do nothing if there are no basic problems.

since the 'last' appropriate application would likely 'set' itself as 'default', u'r in charge of declaring what apps IS default more or less.

each app probably has a 'file types' section. use it to 'set' what u want. then open ALL the other apps and ensure that they do not associate the same type.

many apps have an option 'take back all file types on startup' ... ensure it's OFF if u want to declare another app as default.

also note the 'right click/open_with' options. u can 'choose application' (if the one u want doesn't show up in the recommended list) and check the 'always use' box.

if u end up w/ an app that continually takes back association, check it's options for the 'reclaim all file types' on open option and disable it.
