Black Screen At Start Up In Normal Mode after recent Win Update, Safe Mode loads fine

I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 running XP with a 2.8 P4 HT and 512 ram.
I am getting a black screen at start up when desktop should be loading, though I am hearing the startup tune. Windows loads fine in Safe mode and I've tried a system restore to no avail. Now it won't allow me to use sys restore. I have heard it has something to do with the recent windows update from another PC user while showing my laptop to a tech at Comp USA. Does anyone know how to fix this? I understand it probably has something to do with display drivers.

My System

AdonisViandelia - Welcome to the Board

The reported troubles with a certain update - including a black screen at start up are dealt with in this MS Knowledge Base Article ....

Systems that have changed the default Access Control List permissions on the %windir%\registration directory may experience various problems after you install the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-051 for COM+ and MS DTC
