Where are icon positions stored in registry?

Hopefully, someone knows the answer to this. When I change my screen resolution all of my icons move to compensate for the reduced/enlarged desktop space.

However, when I restore the resolution they do not re-locate to their original position. I'd like to be able to save the setting in a .reg file of possible. I've found very little help by searching Google. One webpage I found suggested exporting the key at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams

This doesn't seem to work though. When I restore the registry file and press F5 to refresh the desktop the icons do not move. I'd also like to find out where the position of Active Desktop items is stored as well if possible.

 

Perhaps you would consider using a free stand alone executable that stores your Desktop icon layout and will restore it when you need to do so. I'm sure it merely copies the appropriate Registry key and runs a .reg file when you ask it to so you don't really have to do the messy work. I recommend it highly.

I've found a dll file distributed by microsoft called layout.dll. It allows you to right click the recycle bin and choose Save/Restore Icon Positions. This is the functionality I need. I I could figure out a way to interface with this dll that would be great.

 

Put that .dll in your system32 directory and then run the .reg file that comes with it.

 

Yeah that part works. I want to be able to call it without having to right click the recycle bin. That would be ideal.

 

Well, that's tough since you can't do that with that version.

However, with the one I offered, you can place a shortcut to each of the two executables onto your Quick Launch toolbar and always have easy access to either Save or Restore. That's what I have done and find it very handy. You need not run the program and consume resources since running the executables in this manner provides all the functionality without any burden. That's all explained in the readme file that comes with it.

If you want to pursue the Registry location of this item or for any future research, I recommend that you get RegShot. It takes a snapshot of the Registry before changes and another one after so you can located the affected areas.
