Alright, first: My computer is a Dell Inspiron 5160 with a heating problem (ordered a new cooling pad) with a 3.06ghz Pentium 4 processor and 1.25 gigs of RAM. I run Spybot, Adaware, CCleaner, TweakNow and Systemworks' One-Button Checkup frequently.

I recently installed Windows XP Professional, and it was the day Dell came to replace my system's hardware. The hardware tested fine.

What's happening is that when I boot, it will take about four to six minutes to _really_ boot. Like, I'll be able to nagivate around my computer, but in the Task Manager no Users are displayed, and my Network Connection thing isn't in my taskbar. I can't view anything dealing with the internet or networking until this ~five minutes is up. Before I disabled the ONSIO device, I'd get errors displayed in the event viewer where it was trying to load something.

Also before disabling it (I'd tried uninstalling it many times) I'd get this error in the event viewer:
The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was C0000005 from line 44 of d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.

I googled it until I couldn't find any more relevant links, but to no avail. Reinstalling my Dell Wireless LAN device works, but only for that boot where it wants to reinstall it.

I'd also get this error in the system section of the event viewer, before I disabled the ONSIO device:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
    SMPLSCSI

It seems to be for my scanner. I installed a scanner (Microtek SlimScan) a while ago, but not before installing XP Pro. It's also with SP2, by the way.

I uninstalled the scanner (because some of the things were linked to it) but nothing changed.

I also reinstalled Windows a good three times. Everything's fine until I restart.

After disabling the ONSIO device, there are no errors or warnings in the event viewer, but it's still taking a very long time to get the network icons in the tray.

I don't have too much in my startup.

Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

Heh, my network is my computer and my sister's. I'm also on a wireless connection.

Do you have any network drives or printers mapped and set to reconnect when you boot?

I have a printer, I think, but I'm pretty sure the network isn't the problem. I think it deals with the error code I'm getting.

I uninstalled the ENSIO device driver, and now I'm getting this:
The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was 80070422 from line 44 of d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80040206.

Maybe something isn't agreeing with SP2? Everything was fine until I installed Pro w/ SP2.

I think that what's happening is making the total boot-time longer, which results in taking longer to get my networking icon in my system tray.

Also, if I try to view my system properties, it won't come up until it's "finished booting," and the monitor flashes once.

It seems like something is taking a very very long time to complete, and these errors don't seem normal.

    Thanks for helping :).

I agree that the fault is not with the network - or at least not completely with the network. However, certain settings on a networked PC can cause the system to do a search for printers on your network and on the internet before it will complete the boot up process and that can really bog things down.

It should be easy enough to figure out if Volume Shadow Copy Service itself is causing problems. The service is nice for some things (see the linked article) but not essential so start->run->services.msc and disable the service. Since it won't be trying to start you can see if there is any improvement. I'd also suggest you run
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
to let the utility replace vssvc.exe if it happens to be damaged.

I did some searching and found quite a few folks who have the same pair of errors with VSS and that same COM+ error so it is likely that disabling the VSS won't help. Seems to stem from a variety of issues. nVIDIA drivers have caused a few of them and a system clock set to the wrong year has done a few others.

    Hm, thanks.

What I did to solve my problem was set my permissions to the default =P, in a small attempt to see if it would work-- which it did.
    Thanks though!

    Me Too...

Hey - I've been having this same exact puzzling issue for a couple years now also! Do you also happen to notice that there is floppy activity also right before the network icon shows up in your system tray? Anyway, I happened to be searching COM+ Event Log errors and luckily came to this forum. Where are you changing your permissions and why would that have anything to do with this problem I wonder? Any info would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks very much!
