In Device Manager, when I look under USB controllers, I see something titled "Unknown Device." I think this is my RCA Modem from Comcast High-Speed Internet but I'm not sure. This is very strange. When I try finding my modem in SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE window, I don't see it. I don't even see the window until I plug in my iPod, which it recognizes.

Does anyone know what's going on or what I can do to fix this?

It could be your modem assuming that it is USB and Windows simply does not recognise it, but if it is working OK leave well alone :) 'Unknown Device' does not necessarily imply a problem and I cannot think of a reason why you would want to remove the modem - safely or otherwise, while the PC was running.

If you are really keen on pursuing this try reloading the modem drivers.

I can't speak for all USB modems, but my ADSL USB modem shows up in Device Manager under it's own heading.

Does the "Unknown Device" disappear if You disconnect the modem? (Shut down the computer, disconnect the modem and restart the computer.)

Check the properties of the "Unknown Device" to find out if any drivers have been installed.

I think you have Windows standard drivers installed for your USB controllers.

Run the setup/installation CD that came with your computer and go to the drivers section. You can install any drivers that relate to USB, but also check that the others have been installed (especially chipset drivers).

I had a look at Hardware Manager on mine. I have not gotten round to installing the USB drivers yet. I have an "Unknown USB Controller" listed under "Other Devices ". This will be the USB 2.0 controller. I am going to install it now. Thanks for reminding me :) .

It may be worth finding the website for your motherboard (a quick way is usually to enter the model number in a Google search or find it at Support at the manufacturer's website). If updated drivers for your system have been issued they will be listed there.
