When I had to completely re-install XP on my wife's computer, somehow, WinXP got installed to her boot HD and that got the name E:. The zip drive became C: and the CD drive became D: ----- Quite a mess

However, everything has been working fine for a year and it has made no difference until today. I re-installed WINXP for her -- no problem-- until I tried to install SP2 from a MS CD.

I got an error message stating that the HD did not enough room and it needed 600 meg. I know the boot HD (E:) has more than that so I conclude it is looking to install on drive C: :( If I can fool the SP2 CD into installing on E: that would fix it.

I don't want to take everying off and start from scratch so I am wondering about drive letter re-assignment. I checked that and found it didn't look at C: at all. Since C: is really a zip drive, could I do that reassigning E: to C: the way it should be. F: (a second HD0) has her data and that could retain its current designation. I know this is a mess but it looks like that's the way it will have to be until the next XP install unless I can do this.

tenbob--Here is how you should be able to assign Drive letters permanently to each drive.
Right click My Computer|Manage|Disk Management. In the bottom section of the right panel, right click the bar representing the drive whose letter you want to change. Click Change Drive Letter and Paths|Change. Select the drive letter you want. OK.

So far I know about that but (1) does that change the location that the installed software will look for its parts, those noted in the Registry.

And (2) do I just ignore the fact that the system looks at C: as a zip drive?

I don't want to have to re-install the software to correct the Registry entries.

XP won't let you change the drive letter of your system disk. But, you can try this work around:

    C:\>subst /?
Associates a path with a drive letter.

    SUBST [drive1: [drive2:]path]
    SUBST drive1: /D

drive1: Specifies a virtual drive to which you want to assign a pa
[drive2:]path Specifies a physical drive and path you want to assign to
    a virtual drive.
/D Deletes a substituted (virtual) drive.

Type SUBST with no parameters to display a list of current virtual drives.

You might be able to change C to K (or some other letter) and then change E to C....OR, yank out the darn zip drive and change E to C. It'll go back to E after you reboot.
