Windows Xp not activated what happens ?

Hi,
I have a curious question...When Windows Xp is not activated what happens ? I have Windows Xp on my computer and the CD I bought to install it with is the same CD I used to install it in another computer but it won't activate using the Internet...The problem is, I thought Microsoft intentionally did this, but for some reason thought you can still install it but would require a different activation code which could be obtained once you attempted to activate it...I did not realize additional license numbers was the answer to doing it this way...Not sure if that makes sense but I apparently got confused and called Microsoft..They explained how to get more licenses and the cost, etc, etc but that's not what I wish to do...They explained after the 30 day activation time frame certain Xp features will no longer be available...I am seeking info on what those features are and if the person computer I installed this on, has AOL will they still be able to access AOL because certain features will not be available...I forgot to ask them that question and hoping someone here has that that possible answer(s)...Thanks again

Umm, I think they kinda goofed here. You'll be locked out of the entire OS if you don't activate it. Other MS products that require activation will still work to some extent I believe but with windows itself, you're out of luck.

At 30 days, XP will only do Activation, forget AOL.

Just curious, but wouldn't MicroSoft give him a very hard time now if he ever had to re-install and re-activate Windows again... I'm wondering because of the piracy things going on now.....

When Windows is activated, MS records certain hardware info. The first computer you installed XP on and activated is the one they will have "on file", and if there are too many hardware changes on their point scale the next time that cd is used, and the activation process begins, you will have to call MS again, explain yourself, and beg for mercy. After 30 days, the second computer you installed XP on will boot to an activation screen, and go no further. Since you know you can't legally activate the second installation, best to get all the data off of that computer before the 30 days is up.

Alpha and Omega, as long as it is the same computer, or more specifically the same basic hardware, a reinstall should not be a problem. However, due to his attempt to activate a second computer, I would say his copy of XP is flagged.
If someone was to replace a motherboard, I would try phone activation first.

Easiest solution would be to have friend purchase xp. Then call ms using the activation phone number and explain what has occurred to date. The friend will then be able to provide the new product key to ms who may may then allow the install to be activated. The product key & serial number can also be changed on the computer to the new key. This may be easier than reinstalling.
