What is this? pml driver HPZ12

Hi All: Looking in Event Viewer, System, I see repeated (dozens of times) of this entry. Starting, running, stopping. Anybody know what this is?

 

Looks like your printer driver. Are you doing lots of that? Maybe something else though..

Hey Dude, long time no see! Thanks for the response. Yeah, I thought it was related to the printer too, but all those entries? I have HP's 7760 USB printer. Why the driver would start, run, stop dozens of times when the printer is not in use just got me wondering. It did that all night long last night, dozens of entries in event viewer while I was sleeping, starting, running, stopping.

I'm going to email HP for confirmation, see what they got to say. Will post back if they answer. Or maybe just turn the printer off and see if the entries continue.

Turned off printer, entries stopped. Why that driver would start & stop repeatedly when the printer is on but not in use is still a mystery. Needless use of CPU cycles?

My HP printer behaved the same way. It came with nearly 700MB of software, three entries in start up, and it tried to seize control of all of my image files. All this for $70? By snooping the web, I found "abbreviated" drivers- all I need to run the 3-in-1 without the bloat. Since then, the printer has behaved like I want it to- only comes on when I call for it, and doesn't call home everytime I access, modify or delete a graphics file. Paranoid? Who, me? Nah...

Hi Johanna: Yeah, everytime I try a new digital photo editing program it tries to sieze control of all the images, start with Windows, phone home for any number of reasons. And this behavior seems to increase exponentially with each update. I disabled all the HP stuff that wanted to run, phone home, auto update, seize all image files etc. etc. but the darn driver just wants to start and stop, apparently at random and for no reason. So, just what are these "abbreviated drivers "?

I went to a site I found with Google and downloaded a 600K file from an unknown source. It was described as "essentials only" for my flavor of HP. I then installed it, (Do not try this at home!) throwing caution to the wind, and it's worked perfectly ever since. This is not a good solution for anyone else reading this thread, especially you. I run a "carefree computer" and am prepared to blitz it and start over from scratch at any time. Those "drivers" I tried could have been a wolf in sheep's clothing, but I got lucky. Send me your particular HP model number by regular email, and I will check to see what I can find. (Arie would have a cow if I posted even the "reputable" crackz or warez links on the BBS!)

I want to be clear that I am not suggesting this HP workaround to the general readership. If you don't have Surferdude2's level of experience, TonyT's nerves of steel, or Martin's incredibly bad luck, you shouldn't be playing around like this. It is foolish to download and install drivers or software from people you don't know or sites you can't trust. Most people will not come out of an encounter with hacked/cracked software, from anonymous sources, unscathed. Like Martin, I am not content to leave well enough alone, and I want things exactly like I want them, so I understand his frustration with a printer that has a mind of its own. Since I can compensate for my foolishness and idiosyncrasies, I play as hard as I want to, without risking a thing. That said, do not rush out and grab hacked anything for yourself or grandma trying to be helpful. You will be sorry, and System Restore won't save you. XP Repair might not save you, either. Once you authorize the install (and, thus, registry changes), you take it all on faith. Never download anything from any site you don't trust, or you will wind up in Noahdfear's hospital, down the hall in the Security Forum, posting logs that will make your eyes bleed.

Jeez Johanna, here all along I thought I have had incredibly good luck. After all, having the world's record of crashes and recovering from each and every one of them without reformatting and/or reinstalling Windows, sounds incredibly lucky to me.

After all, this machine is currently running 6 internal hard drives, one external hard drive, totaling 790GB, 4 optical drives along with printers, scanners, cameras, LAN, DSL, and a number of other perifials too numerous to list. I think this is a tribute to MSFT and the peerless XP operating system.

I claim "carefree" computing too, as my impeccable imaging routine is able to recover from anything that could possibly go wrong without having to reinstall anything. I mean, after all, what's a BSOD now and then mean in the overall scheme of things?

 

I know, Martin, and I applaud your determination. I don't know a soul who could hook together that array of stuff successfully without blood, sweat and tears, and never slamming the XP disk into the drive out of sheer frustration, except you. Your computer, aptly named "Catastrophy ", is a known sentient being on this BBS, with a dedicated mission of driving you crazy. She is, like all women, unpredictable and devious, and loves tormenting you with her whims and quirks. Maybe not "bad luck ", but certainly adequate motivation for occasional desperate measures. It is a testimony to your skill and (Mrs. Martin might say pig-headedness?) tenacity that Catastrophy isn't burning down Atlanta or being used as a doorstop. I don't know what sweet words you whisper to Catastrophy in the dark, but it's clear you are still winning. Rock on, Martin!
