Question very slow to find "My Computer"

Hi - I have a problem we can't seem to figure out. We have already run several adware/spyware/virus programs, and it otherwise runs fine, but...

#1 - whenever I go to "My Computer", it has to search for it first - taking about two minutes before it finds it. No other files are slow like this.

#2 - the other weird item, perhaps related - when I use my FTP-related programs (Cute FTP, Dreamweaver) It gives me this error message " This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose Switch To to activate the busy program and correct the problem." - But I am not running any "other program"! Sometimes, if I hit "Retry" on that error message a dozen times, it will finally connect....

Could this be a hardware issue? (We did have a lightning strike nearby recently)

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

~Cindy

Two general 'fix up' things I'd try before looking around very much

Click on start, on run, key in
Code:
sfc /scannow
and click OK. The system file checker will replace any damaged or missing system files.

Click on start, on run, key in cmd and click OK. From the cmd prompt
Code:
chkdsk /r
and answer Yes to having the job done at next boot then reboot.

You may think you are not. But Windows may say differently.

I have been fooled a couple of times. I did not start a progam but Windows did.

Take a look at Taskmanager.

And/or Type " MSCONFIG " in the Start-Run line.

Also some program that you did run may not have shutdown properly.

Then follow up on your "Dreamweaver" hunch. This error, word for word" came up often on a google search related to Dreamweaver. Indications seemed to be incorrect settings from within Dreamweaver or a service needed by such was not running or working.
