    msgwnd-
What is it, why is it on my computer, and how can I make it behave if it is indeed a legitimate file? For some reason, booting is awfully slow, and shutting down is delayed or impossible because of msgwnd. I don't use MSN Messenger, or have it installed, and all the other flavors of MS Mess are disabled.
    TIA,
    Johanna

Found this on a Czech robotics site

"Exe file MSGWND.EXE shall be run before communication with the robot. "
    http://cmp.felk.cvut.cz/cmp/courses/robe99wc.html (At bottom of page)

Have anything to do with robots (Floor robots etc..). File may be part of its software. Do you have a program called "Matlab" anywhere?

Thanks, Alex! I found those references, too, but none seem to apply to me. It doesn't show as running in the task manager, but when I try to reboot msgwnd hangs and I have to kill it. Something is also making the system take inordinately long to boot.

Even though I knew the comp was clean, I ran all the usual scans anyway. Nothing. I'm not a gamer, have not installed any new programs in a couple of weeks, and have no ideas where this msgwnd came from. Any more ideas?

Does it appear in the start up list?
    (Run --> msconfig --> startup)

Do you know the file location?

The command changes the way MSN notifications appear on your deskptop.

It is probably being called from within some other program and doesn't actually run at all times.

Localize by disabling each startup systematically until symptoms disappear.

    SD2,
There is nothing in the start up list that hasn't been there for 6 months. I cannot find a path to msgwnd, or a file or folder with that name. I uninstalled MSN the day I installed XP, last September.

See if my logic is correct: if it is not responding and won't let me end Windows, it must be a running process. If it is, shouldn't it show in task mgr? There is nothing in Task Mgr I don't recognize except for a few new Symantec...ummm...there is a feature to NIS 05 to scan MSN IMs...hmmm..okay, off to do some more checking.

Thank you all for your help. By the way, I will never purchase NIS again, and when I get back from vacation, I'm reinstalling XP and putting ANYTHING else on in it's place because Norton blew it with this 05 version.

    Good find Johanna

I would bet that others will appreciate the info.

I hope you made new Restore Points.

I myself QUIT using Norton Products a long time ago when I found that they did not do much more than HEAVILY load up and slow down the system. Even before XP.

However I do still use ( from the CD only ) WinDoctor From System Works 2003 after I do any removal of software. Then run RegSeeger after that. And I do this on all three machines. 2-98SE and 1-XP Pro.

As of this time I have had no problems. Maybe this is because I do watch CAREFULLY what WinDoctor wants to do.

But seing as I am using XP Pro I make VERY sure that I have a recent System Restore Point. On one occasion ( when I messed up ) I did have to use SR.

And I also check to makes sure there is a recent RB00x.cab file on the 98SE machines. And make new ones there also after any cleanup work.

    Johanna,

Suggest you do a find for that word within all the files on your computer. It sounds like some program still retains some source code.

Thank you, Sparrow, I tried that as one of the first things. The only real change has been the update to NIS 05, so I suspect the issues are related somehow. When (if) I figure it out, I'll post back.

    Johanna,

Just in case you misunderstood what I meant to say, I think that word MUST be somewhere on your hard disk, and you must look INSIDE all the files to find it, not just at the file names. If you have already done that, I apologize for beating a dead? horse, but I would wonder about the MS search algorithm. An error message cant just make up a name, or can it?

    charlesvar,

Interesting, charlesvar, but does it find labels for subtoutines. I suspect that's what we're looking for.
