I checked the event viewer, and under system seen the following errors Source: ACPI Category: NONE Type Error. There are two ID's 4 and 5 both with the same discription. Description: AMLI is attempting to writh to an illegal I/O port address(0x74) which lies in the 0x74-0x76 protected address range. This could cause system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance. Is there a way to correct this The BIOS has the latest update. Is there something in the BIOS that I maybe overlooking.

I'm positive I have the latest BIOS update. How do you revert the HALs. I really do not want to do a repair install. I was reading the one response from the link you gave me that said you can change to standard computer in the Device manager. Is there a trick to doing this and how would you do it? I went Computer ACPI and it told me that the device is working properly. Should I still worry about the ACPI error in the Event Viewer?

Anyone have any ideas short of reinstalling the OS and if I erase the drive with Compaq Hard Sisk Drive Tools, perform a clean install of the OS will that take care of the problem, or will it return?

If I change to Standard PC then I'll have to shut down manually. Compaq advised me that the BIOS may not be XP compatible they didn't know for sure. I read somewhere about BIOS protocol not being in place back in 2000 or earlier. But don't quote me on that. When I asked the Compaq Tech about system instibility. I guess the Tech did some research then got back to me and advised that if I could live with the error in the event viewer there should be nothing to worry about. The system has been up and running for about a week now without any issues. I was also advised that I could erase the drive and perform a clean install again, and see if that corrects the problem. I wish I could find an easier way but I guess there isn't one.

How and where would you look to find out what is trying to write to the illegal I/O port address (0x74 and 0x75) in the 0x74-0x76 protected address range?

I checked every piece of hardware in the machine and I'm still getting the error in the event viewer. Anyone have any other tests.

0x74-0x76 protected address range is Extended CMOS. How do you figure what's trying to write to it?

hook up a kernel debugger, set a ba i 74, dump the stack when it hits it. Note that its the BIOS itself doing it. Realize your kung fu is insufficient to decode AML. Have a beer and wax poetic on the joys of technology, then in the morning, install standard pc HAL.

or, realize that you are tilting a windmill, and go to standard pc HAL.

Maybe I'm being too critical. Maybe I should just listen to what Compaq said "A reinstall might or might not correct the problem. There's no guarantee, and if it's running without any problems and if I can live with the error in the event viewer then leave it alone. There shouldn't be any instability issues ". I guess what they were trying to tell me was "If ain't broke don't fix it ".
